The original home of A Different Light, (affectionately called "Stupid Light in my cult classic film- Hustler White) a pioneering gay bookstore, was demolished on Saturday even after a developer had vowed to leave the Silver Lake building alone until further community meetings could be held, according to city and neighborhood council officials. Shoppers and visitors at Silver Lake’s Sunset Junction on Saturday were met with the sights and sounds of a bulldozer that mowed down a row of storefronts and, along with them, a piece of gay neighborhood history. In 1979, Norman Laurila and George Leigh opened a gay book shop called A Different Light in the vaguely Tudor-style storefront at 4014 Santa Monica Boulevard. A Different Light eventually added locations in West Hollywood, San Francisco and New York, becoming one of the nation’s largest gay-owned booksellers. Gregory A. McVey-Russell, who publishes a blog called The Gar Spot, recalls a visit to the Silver Lake book shop: It sat in a little white building nestled on a small block squeezed by Santa Monica and Sunset. I always had problems finding it exactly, and then there was the parking which was challenging even for a motorcycle. I didn’t drive cars in those days. It was small and crammed, the way all independent, hippy-ish bookstores should be. The staff always smiled.

That’s my recollection of visiting A Different Light Bookstore in its original location in Silver Lake. Someone was about to do a reading that evening, I believe, but I didn’t hang out for it. Don’t know why, really. Freshly minted out of the closet, maybe I was just shy. But I do remember the friendly, welcoming vibe at the store and I remember visiting once or twice more before hanging out regularly at the closer and bigger store in West Hollywood. The Silver Lake store closed its doors in 1992. As major chains and online stores began to carry a larger inventory of gay-themed books and publications, A Different Light in West Hollywood announced it was closing down in 2009. The chain’s last remaining store in San Francisco announced it was closing earlier this year. DISCO MEMORIES

one of the first "disco" songs~1974 "Rock Your Baby" is a popular song by George McCrae. Written and produced by Harry Wayne Casey and Richard Finch of KC and the Sunshine Band, "Rock Your Baby" was one of the landmark recordings of early disco music. A massive international hit, the song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the United States, spending two weeks at the top in July 1974, number one on the R&B singles chart, and repeating the feat on the UK singles chart, spending three weeks at the top of the chart in July 1974. It is one of the fewer than thirty all-time singles to have sold 10 million (or more) copies worldwide. The backing track for the record had been recorded in 45 minutes as a demo, and featured guitarist Jerome Smith (June 18, 1953 – July 28, 2000) of KC and the Sunshine Band. The track was not originally intended for McCrae, but he happened to be in the studio, added a vocal, and the resultant combination of infectious rhythm and falsetto vocals made it a hit. "Rock Your Baby" inspired the drum part in the ABBA hit "Dancing Queen". The hit song later inspired a reply hit "Rockin' Chair" sung by Gwen McCrae then-wife of George McCrae released one year later on TK's Cat subsidiary label with similar music and arrangement. "I'll Take You There" is a number-one single written and produced by Al Bell and performed by soul/gospel family band The Staple Singers, released on Stax Records in February 1972. The song spent a total of fifteen weeks on the charts and reached number one on the Hot 100.

GEORGE JUNIUS STINNEY JR.

He was 14 yrs. 6mos. and 5 days old --- and the youngest person executed in the United States in the 20th Century George Junius Stinney, Jr. [b. 1929 - d. 1944] In a South Carolina prison sixty-six years ago, guards walked a 14-year-old boy, bible tucked under his arm, to the electric chair. At 5' 1" and 95 pounds, the straps didn’t fit, and an electrode was too big for his leg. The switch was pulled and the adult sized death mask fell from George Stinney’s face. Tears streamed from his eyes. Witnesses recoiled in horror as they watched the youngest person executed in the United States in the past century die. Now, a community activist is fighting to clear Stinney’s name, saying the young boy couldn’t have killed two girls. George Frierson, a school board member and textile inspector, believes Stinney’s confession was coerced, and that his execution was just another injustice blacks suffered in Southern courtrooms in the first half of the 1900s. In a couple of cases like Stinney’s, petitions are being made before parole boards and courts are being asked to overturn decisions made when society’s thumb was weighing the scales of justice against blacks. These requests are buoyed for the first time in generations by money, college degrees and sometimes clout. “I hope we see more cases like this because it help brings a sense of closure. It’s symbolic,” said Howard University law professor Frank Wu. “It’s not just important for the individuals and their families. It’s important for the entire community. Not just for African Americans, but for whites and for our democracy as a whole. What these cases show is that it is possible to achieve justice.” Some have already achieved justice. Earlier this year, syndicated radio host Tom Joyner successfully won a posthumous pardon for two great uncles who were executed in South Carolina. In the Stinney case, supporters want the state to admit that officials executed the wrong person in June 1944. Stinney was accused of killing two white girls, 11 year old Betty June Binnicker and 8 year old Mary Emma Thames, by beating them with a railroad spike then dragging their bodies to a ditch near Acolu, about five miles from Manning in central South Carolina. The girls were found a day after they disappeared following a massive manhunt. Stinney was arrested a few hours later, white men in suits taking him away. Because of the risk of a lynching, Stinney was kept at a jail 50 miles away in Columbia. Stinney’s father, who had helped look for the girls, was fired immediately and ordered to leave his home and the sawmill where he worked. His family was told to leave town prior to the trial to avoid further retribution. An atmosphere of lynch mob hysteria hung over the courthouse. Without family visits, the 14 year old had to endure the trial and death alone. The execution of George Stinney was carried out at the South Carolina State Penitentiary in Columbia, South Carolina, on June 16, 1944. At 7:30 p.m., Stinney walked to the execution chamber with a Bible under his arm. Standing 5'1" and weighing just over 90 pounds, he was small for his age, which presented difficulties in securing him to the frame holding the electrodes. Neither did the state's adult-sized face-mask fit Stinney; his convulsing exposed his face to witnesses as the mask slipped free. Stinney was declared dead within four minutes of the initial electrocution. READ MORE-

Working as a performer since he was a small child, he was a superstar as a teenager for the films in which he played Andy Hardy, and he has had one of the longest careers of any actor, to date spanning almost 90 years. He is the last surviving male star from 1930s Hollywood.
