America has never seen anything like this. Time and again, Donald Trump has attacked the very fabric of US democracy. He has called the press ‘the enemy of the American people’. He says that claims that Russia interfered in the US election are a hoax. And that the FBI - currently investigating his campaign - should be personally loyal to the president. And it’s not just political institutions Trump is damaging, his opponents say: in America he has stoked racial tension, coddled Wall Street and given succour to the gun lobby. On the world stage, he’s alienated key allies, slapped $50 billion in tariffs on China that may spark off a trade war, and appointed the hawkish John Bolton, who has advocated regime change in Iran and North Korea, as national security adviser. If Trump is a new kind of threat, the big question is whether the damage he is doing to America will be permanent. Will the country that survived two world wars, the Cold War and the attacks of 9/11 really be put off its stride by a reality show host who could be gone in less than three years’ time? Or is Trump dismantling the robust system that has kept America united and irreparably damaging its standing as the most powerful nation on earth? But perhaps this is all liberal hand-wringing. Could Trump, in fact, be that rarest of things -

a politician who delivers on his promises - and prove to be the reformer the American electorate voted for? To examine the political health and standing of the United States at this crucial moment, Intelligence Squared brought together Ronan Farrow, former US government adviser and journalist, who has just been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for breaking the Harvey Weinstein scandal; Mark Lilla, the American political scientist who hit the headlines last year with an article arguing that it is the left’s preoccupation with identity politics that opened the door to Trump’s victory; Lionel Shriver, award-winning novelist and commentator; and Brian Klaas, an expert on authoritarianism who claims that with every autocratic tweet Trump is edging America away from its democratic norms.

 is an American activist and advocate for gun control. As a high school senior she survived the February 2018 Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida, 

and in response co-founded the gun-control advocacy group Never Again MSD.

González first drew national attention after a speech she gave at a rally against gun violence went viral, famously proclaiming "We call B.S." on the lack of action by politicians funded by the NRA. Subsequently, González continued to be an outspoken activist on gun control, making high profile media appearances and helping organize the March for Our Lives, which became the largest student protest in American history. Speaking at the demonstration, González led a moment of silence for the victims of the massacre, standing on stage for six minutes and 20 seconds, which she observed was the length of the shooting spree.

González was attacked for her Fort Lauderdale speech by many from the political right wing of American politics and press. She has also faced derogatory comments made by internet trollsabout her sexual orientation, short hair, and skin color. She was verbally attacked by Leslie Gibson, Republican candidate running unopposed for the Maine legislature and lifetime NRA member, who referred to her as a "skinhead lesbian", whereupon 28-year-old Eryn Gilchrist filed papers to run against him, thus providing an opponent; Republican former state Senator Thomas Martin, Jr., who said that Gibson's remarks did not represent the Maine Republican Party, and that he planned to contact the survivors to commend their courage, also filed to run for the seat. A few days later, Gibson dropped out of the race.

Conspiracy theorists have falsely accused the students, including González, of being crisis actors. Benjamin Kelly, an aide to Florida state Representative Shawn Harrison, was fired after making such accusations.  Donald Trump Jr. faced criticism for appearing to support the crisis actor accusations.

Following her highly publicized speech at the March for Our Lives, pro-gun activists doctored fake photos and video showing González ripping up a copy of the United States Constitution, spreading them widely on internet forums and social media. Snopes.com observed that the video was in fact a digitally manipulated Teen Vogue video of her tearing up shooting range targets.

González identifies as bisexual. According to Vogue, her buzz cut is not a reaction to the school shooting. "People asked me, 'Are you taking a feminist stand?' No, I wasn't. It's Florida. Hair is just an extra sweater I’m forced to wear," González recalled. "I even made a PowerPoint presentation to convince my parents to let me shave my head, and it worked."

MANY TIMES BECOMING,"JEWS WILL NOT REPLACE US."
 THE FASCIST GROUP SHOUTED TO COUNTER PROTESTERS- "YOU SOUND LIKE N**GERS AND "FA*GOTS." 

THE SCENE WAS VERY INTENSE AS THE GROUP SURROUNDED THE JEFFERSON MEMORIAL AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA.  WHITE NATIONALISTS SURROUNDED A SMALL GROUP OF COUNTER PROTESTERS AND FIGHTS BROKE OUT.

CIVIL RIGHTS PROTESTERS SHOUTED- "BLACK LIVES MATTER", 

WHITE NATIONALISTS COUNTERED WITH "WHITE LIVES MATTERS". 

INITIALLY THERE WAS LITTLE OR NO POLICE PRESENCE.

 EVENTUALLY THE POLICE SHOWED UP, "SUSPICIOUSLY SLOW" ONLY TO DISPERSE A GROUP OF MEDIA JOURNALISTS AS ALL THE WHITE NATIONALISTS PUT OUT THERE TORCHES AND LEFT ON THEIR OWN, WITHOUT ANY HARASSMENT WHAT-SO-EVER. 

THIS MARCH WAS VERY WELL ORGANIZED AND APPEARED TO HAVE NO INTERVENTION BY THE POLICE.

ONE LONE BLACK STUDENT YELLED AT THE POLICE, "WHY DON'T YOU DO SOMETHING? IF THIS WAS A BLACK LIVES MATTER PROTEST, YOU'D ALREADY HAVE DOGS AND WATER CANNONS! IF YOU'RE NOT WANTING TO PROTECT BLACK PEOPLE, HOW ABOUT THE STUDENTS OF UVA?!"

THERE IS GREAT CONCERN THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING OF THESE MARCHES.
