Few photographers have captured the rugged beauty and bold sexuality of Los Angelenos to the same degree as Rick Castro.
A writer, photographer, and filmmaker, Castro began his artistic career chronicling the lives of LA street hustlers in the mid-1980s.
Cruising along Santa Monica Boulevard in his 1967 Mercury Cougar, Castro would invite men to model for him in impromptu photo sessions.
On occasion, he would take these men to his personal studio, recording their stories through short, informal films on VHS.
This project would eventually culminate in his collaboration with Bruce La Bruce on the famous 1996 film, Hustler White, featuring Tony Ward navigating the erotic opportunities and dangers of Hollywood’s cruising scene.
What emerges from Castro’s S/M Blvd series is an intimate story about queer life in LA, a snapshot of a raw, seductive Hollywood where opportunity and risk walked hand in hand
