Swazi king endorses mass circumcision to fight HIV
By Agence France-Presse
MANKAYANE, Swaziland — Swaziland's King Mswati III called Friday for his male subjects to get circumcised as he endorsed a campaign aimed at tackling the world's highest HIV infection rate.
Flanked by a large royal contingent including his mother, who rules alongside him, four of his 13 wives and several children, Africa's last absolute monarch said men and boys needed to get circumcised to help fight the "terrorist" virus, which infects one in four adults in the kingdom of nearly 1.2 million.
Studies have found men without a foreskin are 60 percent less likely to get HIV, the virus that can lead to AIDS.
"It seems fitting that our men and young boys should be given an initiative that will help them fight this disease," Mswati told a gathering of thousands in the southern town of Mankayane, where he gave his official endorsement to the campaign.
"This virus I shall liken to a terrorist. It is here to finish off our people."
Mswati was entertained by bare-breasted teenage girls, troops of warrior regiments and a military brass band.
Urging his nation to "take care of your lives -- stay away from activities that could give you the disease," the king struck a very different note from his pronouncement to parliament a decade ago that HIV-positive people should be "branded and sterilized".

GAY HISTORY- 101
there are some amazing docos coming out about gay history, both local, national and international.
i reccomend everybody, gay or straight, to check them out. these will become a part of civil rights history.
directed by JOSH HOWARD.
THE LAVENDER SCARE is the first feature-length documentary film to tell the story of the U.S. government's ruthless campaign in the 1950s and '60s to hunt down and fire every Federal employee it suspected was gay.
While the McCarthy Era is remembered as the time of the Red Scare, the headline-grabbing hunt for Communists in the United States, it was the Lavender Scare, a vicious and vehement purge of homosexuals, which lasted longer and ruined many more lives.
Before it was over, more than 10,000 Federal employees lost their jobs. Based on the award-winning book by historian David K. Johnson, THE LAVENDER SCARE shines a light on a chapter of American history that has never received the attention it deserves.
directed by GLENNE MCELHINNEY
ON THESE SHOULDERS WE STAND- How California laws against "masking" or "impersonation" were used to discriminate against the LGBT community. LGBT pioneers talk about reaching out to the younger generation in this excerpt from "On These Shoulders We Stand."
Excerpted from "On These Shoulders We Stand," a new film about California LGBT history.
WE WERE HERE, produced and directed by David Weissman, with Bill Weber, editor and co-director.
We Were Here documents the coming of what was called the “Gay Plague” in the early 1980s.
It illuminates the profound personal and community issues raised by the AIDS epidemic as well as the broad political and social upheavals it unleashed. It offers a cathartic validation for the generation that suffered through, and responded to, the onset of AIDS. It opens a window of understanding to those who have only the vaguest notions of what transpired in those years.

THE FAMILY COMPLETE
i went to a screening of a very unusal film last night @ OUTFEST.
it was the american premiere-
“THE FAMILY COMPLETE” is a self-declared “Japanesque hardcore home drama” by director Imaizumi Koichi,
who used to work as a porn actor in Japan’s straight porn business until a few years ago.
The trailer of the movie is as weird as the plot about a mysterious virus stimulating the sex between the members of an all-male family. On the website of the Hong Kong International Film Festival it is described like this: “What begins as a normal Japanese family drama quickly descends into absurity when a man dressed in a bear suit attacks the young-looking grandfather and uses him for furry sex. Soon, incest is the norm, with everyone getting a piece of grandpa, especially the men.”

SEAN CONNERY~ NUDE ARTIST MODEL
Sir Sean Connery nude on public display for first time
A nude painting of Sir Sean Connery discovered in a Scottish Borders artist's unseen collection is to go on public display for the first time.
It was painted in 1951 when the James Bond star was working as an unknown nude model for Edinburgh students.
The oil on canvas was discovered by relatives of artist Rab Webster, who died last year aged 83.
The painting will be part of an exhibition starting on Saturday in Mr Webster's home town of Selkirk.
The former art teacher was a student at Edinburgh College of Art when Sir Sean posed for students shortly before his acting breakthrough.
The Connery work will be part of a selection of Mr Webster's art going on display at Halliwell's House Museum's Oor Rob exhibition.
Scottish Borders Council's visual arts officer Elizabeth Hume said: "I read about the discovery of the Sir Sean Connery painting last year.
"I also noted Rab had never held an exhibition before.
The painting was part of a pile of works found stacked in the studio Mr Webster used as a dark room.
The Oor Rob exhibition at the Robson Gallery at Halliwell's House Museum runs until 14 August.

WILL RUPERT GO DOWN?
A powerful group of News Corp's shareholders have accused Rupert Murdoch of "egregious" behaviour and treating his media empire like a "family candy jar".
The shareholder group, which includes banks and pension funds, accused Murdoch of "rampant nepotism" and using News Corp resources for "his own personal and political objectives".
The institutional shareholders, led by the Amalgamated Bank, said it was "inconceivable" that Murdoch would not have been aware of rampant phone hacking at the News of the World.
"It is inconceivable that [James] Murdoch and his fellow board members would not have been aware of the illicit news gathering practices. And yet, the board took no real action to investigate the allegations until 7 July 2011, when Murdoch selected two of his co-directors to deal with the imbroglio," the shareholders said in a legal filing in Delaware, where News Corp is registered.
"These revelations should not have taken years to uncover and stop," the filing adds. "[They] show a culture run amuck within News Corp and a board that provides no effective review or oversight."
The shareholders noted that Rebekah Brooks, chief executive of News International and editor of the News of the World at the time of the hacking, was "consistently promoted even while the scandal was unfolding".

On October 2008 Murdoch biographer Michael Wolff wrote a Vanity Fair story recounting a meeting between Barack Obama, Murdoch, and Ailes at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York early that summer. Obama had initially resisted Murdoch's proposals for a meeting, despite senior News Corp. executives having recruited the Kennedys to act as go-betweens. According to Wolff, at the meeting Obama raised the issue of Fox News's portrayal of him "as suspicious, foreign, fearsome – just short of a terrorist", while Ailes said it might not have been this way if Obama had "more willingly come on the air instead of so often giving Fox the back of his hand." A "tentative truce" was nonetheless agreed upon.
Wolff also noted that Murdoch has met every US President since, and including, Harry Truman.
In 1999, The Economist reported that Newscorp Investments had made £11.4 billion ($20.1 billion) in profits over the previous 11 years but had not paid net corporation tax. It also reported that after an examination of the available accounts, Newscorp could normally have been expected to pay corporate tax of approximately $350 million. The article explained that in practice the corporation's complex structure, international scope and use of offshore tax havens allowed News Corporation to pay minimal taxes.
According to the 2010 list of Forbes richest Americans, Murdoch is the 38th richest person in the US and the 117th-richest person in the world, with a net worth of $6.2 billion.

THE END OF TABLOID??
ANTEBELLUM BLOGSPOT readers know how we feel about gossip/tabloids...
(we will not post gossip. it's boring)
In what is becoming a historic moment in newspaper/journalistic history, the NEWS OF THE WORLD is over. i would love to see this bring down rupert murdoch, but my dreams are only fantasies for now....
have a gander @ the latest scandal-
LONDON -- Britain's best-selling Sunday tabloid the News of the World signed off with a simple front page message –
"THANK YOU & GOODBYE" – leaving the media establishment here reeling from the expanding phone-hacking scandal that brought down the muckraking newspaper after 168 years.
Journalists crafted the newspaper's own obituary before sending the tabloid's final edition to the printing presses Saturday night, apologizing for letting its readers down but stopping short of acknowledging recent allegations that staff paid police for information.
"We praised high standards, we demanded high standards but, as we are now only too painfully aware, for a period of a few years up to 2006 some who worked for us, or in our name, fell shamefully short of those standards," read a message posted on the tabloid's website. "Quite simply, we lost our way. Phones were hacked, and for that this newspaper is truly sorry."

THE RECREATION OF GLENDA
my very long time doll of a freind GLEN MEADMORE, aka penny, has had a notorious past in the LA music scene.
since the late 80's glen created performance art & early techo recordings with such underground classics as
jim van tyne, genesse p-orridge, helot revolt, dave kendrick, (devo) and steve albini.
back in the day my equally very longtime friends RICK OWENS had glen perform @ MICHELE LAMY'S LES DUEX CAFE for new years eve- 1995? the evening was a glamorous disaster legend.
I don't know all the details but apparently the circular stage spun
out-of-control.
last friday, june 8th, 2011, a cult-legendary reunion took place as RICK OWENS & GLEN MEADMORE were reunited after 16 years @
rick owens & michele lamy's parisian recreation of
