JOHN PALATINUS
JULY 6TH, 1929- SEPTEMBER 22ND, 2014
During the 1950's there was a handfull of men photographing homoerotic imagery. Bob Mizer- AMG, Lon of New York, but there were many unknown photographers.
Photographer John Palatinus created homorerotic images from his apartment in New York city from 1955 till 1959. Selling small prints through the mail,
his buisness was thriving.
his buisness was thriving.
In 1959, Palatinus was investigated by the U.S. Postal Service and police, who raided his New York City apartment. Accused of sending explicit photos through the mail, a criminal offense, he was arrested and put on trial in 1961. Palatinus was found guilty, but allowed to go free because he had spent a night in jail at the time of arrest. All his photos and negs were destroyed.
John was so shaken by the experience that he turned away from physique photography and changed careers. Half a century later renewed interest in his photographs fueled an unexpected career resurgence.
I premiered John Palatinus's first every exhibition at my gallery Antbellum Hollywood on February 14th, 2010. The opening was packed out the door.
John was then greeted with enthusiasm from galleries and festivals where his photographs were featured in exhibitions from San Francisco to Paris, and Berlin, as well as editorials in numerous magazines.
Thrilled with the attention, Palatinus acknowledged it as his second act, which he described as “wonderfully rewarding.”
