GAY POWER- CIRCA 1973

GAY POWER- CIRCA 1973-
On June 28th, 1969, Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera led the Stonewall riots, which were the catapult for the contemporary LGBT rights movement.
Four years later, Sylvia and Marsha were pushed out of the movement and had to fight for the right to have space in Gay Pride parades. Sylvia fought her way on stage at the 1973 Gay Pride march in NYC to deliver a speech that denounces the liberal white gay rights "revolution" and demanded and ACTUAL revolution, one in which QTPOC, specifically, Trans women of color, were centered.
I think of this today, and anytime we talk about Pride™️: how far have we really come when Queer and/or Trans People of Color still have to fight to be heard in greater LGBT spaces?

The upload deleted the captions so here's the transcript:
[crowd noise: booing and yelling]
Sylvia: Yall better quiet down!
I've been trying to get up here ALL day for your gay brothers and your gay sisters in jail! that write me every motherfuckin week and ask for your help. and you all don't do a goddamn thing for them. Have you ever been beaten up? And raped? and jailed?
Now think about it.
They've been beaten up and raped
And so they have to spend much of their money in jail to get their self home and try to get their sex change. The women have tried to fight for their sex changes, or to become women, of the women's liberation.
And they write S.T.A.R., not the women's group.
They do not write women.
They do not write men.
They write to S.T.A.R., because we're trying to do something for them.
I have been to jail!
I have been r*ped!
And beaten. Many times!
By men!
Heterosexual men, that do not belong in the homosexual shelter.
But: do you do anything for them?
No! You all tell me to go and hide my tail between my legs.
I will not no longer put up with this shit.
I have been beaten, I have had my nose broken,
I have been thrown in jail, I have lost my job,
I have lost my apartment,
for gay liberation.
And you all treat me this way??
What the fuck's wrong with you all??
Think about that!
[crowd noise: applause]
I do not believe in a revolution, but you all do.
I believe in the gay...power.
I believe in us getting our rights
or else I would not be out there fighting for our rights.
That's all I wanted to say to you all people.
If you all want to know about the people that are in jail, and do not forget Bambi L'Amour, Andora Marks, Kenny Messner, and other gay people are in jail, come and see the people at S.T.A.R. house on 12th street on 640 E. 12th Street, between B and C, Apartment 14. The people there are trying to do something, for ALL of us, and not men and women that belong to a white middle class white club!
And that's what you all belong to!
REVOLUTION NOWWWWW!!
Gimme a G! [crowd: G!]
Gimme an A! [crowd: A!]
Gimme a Y! [crowd: Y!]
Gimme a P! [crowd: P!]
Gimme a O! [crowd: O!]
Gimme a W! [crowd: W!]
Gimme a E! [crowd: E!]
Gimme a R! [crowd: R!]
Gay... [voice cracks] [more quietly] Gay power.
[crowd noise: applause]
Sylvia: Louder GAY POWER!!
[crowd noise: whistling]

LAUREN'S FIRST WORDS-

Yes, it’s true.
I’m a bit more of a mermaid now.
A truck crossed my path while on my bike and took some leg with it.
Surprisingly I’m feeling well, thanks to all your blessings
and wishes and wonderful energy.
I was awake throughout some of it and really felt the overwhelming love,
you all mean so much to me.
This has been a testament of the love that our family and community has created.

All my Love💖✨ — with Lauren Pine.

THE CONTINENTAL BATHS

The Continental Baths was a gay bathhouse in the basement of The Ansonia Hotel in New York City which was opened in 1968 by Steve Ostrow. It was advertised as reminiscent of "the glory of ancient Rome". The documentary film Continental, by Malcolm Ingram, covers the height of the club's popularity through the early 1970s.

The features of this bathhouse included a disco dance floor, a cabaret lounge, sauna rooms, a narrow "Olympia blue" swimming pool, bunk beds in public areas, and tiny rooms as one would find in any gay bathhouse. The facility had the capacity to serve nearly 1,000 men, 24 hours a day.

One gay guide from the 1970s described the Continental Baths as a place that "revolutionized the bath scene in New York City."
Some features of the Continental Bathhouse included a warning system that tipped off patrons when police arrived. There was also an STD clinic, a supply of A200 (a lice-killing shampoo) in the showers, a mouthwash dispenser, and K-Y Jelly in the candy vending machine.

An added attraction at the club was the first class entertainment provided by performers such as:  Shelley Ackerman

Due to her performances at the baths, Bette Midler earned the nickname Bathhouse Betty.
It was at the Continental, accompanied by pianist Barry Manilow (who, like the bathhouse patrons, sometimes wore only a white towel) that she created her stage persona the Divine Miss M.

Despite Midler's constant complaints about "that goddamn waterfall,"her poolside performances were so successful that she soon gained national attention, beginning with repeat performances on
The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

The Continental Baths lost much of its gay clientele by 1974.
The reason for the decline in patronage was, as one gay New Yorker was quoted, "We finally got fed up with those silly-assed, campy shows. All those straight people in our bathhouse made us feel like we were part of the décor and that we were there for their amusement."

By the end of 1974, patronage was so low that Steve Ostrow had decided to discontinue the lounge acts. He focused, instead, on resurrecting his business by making the baths coed. He even advertised on WBLS, but to no avail. In the end, Ostrow closed the Continental Baths for good. The facility, however, was reopened in 1977 as a heterosexual swingers' club called Plato's Retreat.
Plato's Retreat relocated to W. 34th St. in 1980 then was shut down by the city of New York at the height of the AIDS epidemic.

In February 1969, the New York City Police raided the Continental Baths. Twenty-two patrons, whom an undercover, towel-clad policeman identified as having offered to have sex with him or actually had sex with him, were arrested. This happened again in December of the same year, when police entered the Continental Baths and arrested three patrons and three employees, charging them with committing lewd and lascivious acts and criminal mischief, respectively.

GEORGE PITTS- LEGENDARY

I HAVE PERSONAL MEMORIES OF GEORGE PITTS.
ORIGINALLY MET HIM THROUGH MY ARTIST/PHOTOGRAPHER-
THE LATE CARLOS BATTS, GEORGE & BONDED IMMEDIATELY.
GEORGE HAD COMPLETE ADMIRATION FOR WHAT I WAS CREATED @ ANTEBELLUM HOLLYWOOD, AND WAS ALWAYS SUPPORTIVE.
GEORGE'S PHOTOGRAPHY WAS FEATURED IN MY EXHIBITION- "BLACKS"
ONE OF THE FIRST ALL BLACK FETISH-EROTIC-HOMOEROTIC ART SHOWS
IN LOS ANGELES.
YEARS LATER I MET GEORGE IN NYC @ "TEA & SYMPATHY" FOR A NICE CUPPA.
WE HAD A MUTUAL TEA FETISH IN COMMON.
BESIDES BEING A LEGENDARY PHOTO EDITOR FOR VIBE & LIFE MAGAZINES, GEORGE HAD DROPPED OUT OF THE MAINSTREAM TO BECOME A MONK FOR ONE YEAR. I WAS INTRIGUED BY THIS AND ASKED HIM NUMEROUS QUESTIONS.
GEORGE SAID SOMETHING TO ME THAT I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER-
"BECOMING A MONK WAS THE BEST THING I EVER DID IN MY LIFE.
IT GROUNDED ME, PUT MY PRIORITES IN PLACE AND HELPED ME SUCCEED IN BUISNESS- ONCE I WAS READY TO GO BACK."
RIP- MASTER-

IN LOVING MEMORY: GEORGE PITTS
10 September 1951 – 4 March 2017
Please join us in celebrating the life and legacy of George Pitts on Sunday, April 2nd, 2017. The ceremony will begin at 2:00pm and will be held at the Alvin Johnson/J.M Kaplan Hall at 66 West 12th Street, New York, NY 10011.

As a photographer, artist, poet, teacher, colleague, mentor, friend, and husband George inevitably changed the lives of all who had the pleasure of knowing him. With immeasurable grace, intelligence, and passion, George spent his time prolifically making his own artwork, while simultaneously cultivating creativity and drive in his students as a professor at Parsons for almost two decades.
In each facet of his life, George brought poise, criticality, and deep engagement with the arts. His speech was mesmerizing, his laugh contagious, and his mind entirely unique. George was an amazing and magnetic soul who will truly be missed. It is a deep loss for his family, friends, school and photo community; his impact will never be forgotten.

I Seem and Feel Great Rains Not My System
The rains are a great trial for those in it
In downs it speaks in compression of air being sapped
In bleeds, fallings, gushed moments to contain while yet by the air contained
Twice dead and twice imprisoned, the rain came down and still you are in air
But we love the body, but we love containment
How we love layers, body rain and air
And we move, by on our curve with rain for sides
Our bone born out as thrust when sought by rain,
as form to turn the body in in rain
as rain’s force could flex in body’s turns
But too much with real nature deflaws form
as like when face burned of grimace is burned away
But not like so, but as only to have nudeness
And so stop short the purging before as absence the person
Without his person, unlike being dead, yet near being his body
Because this mind does need this form not bodied to its memory
This person not without its own event, yet in its event it does not need
If in this there shows no feature there then is gladness unnamed
Yet without death closer toward in nature to itself
