ANGEL FACE

Angel Face
1953
The drama, filmed on location in Beverly Hills, California,
features Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons.
"Preminger transforms a second rate James M. Cain murder plot,
re-orchestrating this textbook tale of passion and murder into a haunting and haunted refrain.
The by then clichéd story line is pared away and brought down to an elemental level --
there is not a wasted scene in the film —
and the story's familiarity breeds an aftertaste of inevitability and doom.
The hallucinogenic nature of the proceedings is accented with Preminger's direction and camerawork, having actors drift from foreground to background or having the camera track to fluid and suffocating close-ups. Preminger, ever the mesmerizer, weaves his style into a half-dreamt haze of nightmare."
It was also named by critic Robin Wood as one of his top 10 films, shortly before his death.
In 1963, Jean-Luc Godard named it the 8th best American Sound film

JEANNE MOREAU: EACH MAN KILLS THE THING HE LOVES

— Jean Genet (Querelle)
The lyrics of the song that Jeanne Moreau sings are from Oscar Wilde’s “The Ballad of Reading Gaol,” which was written in 1897 while in exile after his release from Reading Gaol prison. The line “Yet each man kills the thing he loves” was inspired by the hanging of Charles Thomas Wooldridge, a trooper in the Royal Horse Guards, who was convicted of slitting his wife’s throat.
Every man kills what he loves
Yet every man kills what he loves,
And we all know it:
They kill them with a look of hatred,
The others with caressing words,
The coward with a kiss,
The hero with a sword!

They kill their love when they are still young,
Others when they are old,
Some strangers strangle him with the hands of desire,
Certain others with the hands of gold,
The best ones use a knife, for that
The corpses will freeze.

You love too much or too little,
Love sells or buys,
Sometimes the crime is done with infinite tears,
Without a sigh,
Because each one of us kills what he loves
Yet he is not forced to die.

A FACE IN THE CROWD

A Face in the Crowd
1957 film starring Andy Griffith, Patricia Neal and Walter Matthau, directed by Elia Kazan.
The screenplay was written by Budd Schulberg, based on his short story "Your Arkansas Traveler",
from the collection, Some Faces in the Crowd (1953).
The story centers on a drifter named Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes who is discovered by the producer (Neal) of a small-market radio program in rural northeast Arkansas. Rhodes ultimately rises to great fame and influence on national television.
The film launched Griffith into stardom, but earned mixed reviews upon its original release.
Later decades have seen reappraisals of the movie, and in 2008 it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically,
or aesthetically significant".

Young Man with a Horn, (director~ michael curtiz)1950
musical drama film  based on a novel of the same name by Dorothy Baker inspired by the life of
The movie stars Kirk Douglas, Lauren Bacall, Doris Day, and Hoagy Carmichael,
 and produced by Jerry Wald.
The screenplay was written by Carl Foreman and Edmund H. North.
Doris Day described her experience making the film as "utterly joyless", as she had not found working with Douglas to be pleasant. Douglas said that he felt her ever-cheerful persona was only a "mask" and he had never been able to get to know the real person underneath.
Day countered that while Douglas had been "civil",
he was too self-centered to make any real attempt to get to know either her or anyone else.
