FRANK FAY- TEA FOR TWO
"Tea for Two":
- ""Picture you, upon my knee." (This guy just owns one chair?)
- "Just tea for two and two for tea, me for you, and you for me, alone"
- So, here's the situation: the guy just has one chair, but enough tea for two,
so he has two for tea. If anyone else shows up, he shoots 'em! - "Nobody near us, to see us or hear us."
Who'd want to listen to a couple of people drinking tea?
- "We won't have it known, dear, that we own a telephone."
- So, this guy's too cheap to get another chair, he has a telephone,
but won't tell anyone about it!
- "Dawn will break, and you'll awake, and start to bake a sugar cake."
- Oh, this poor woman's life, I can see it now. Dawn breaks, and she's got to start baking, can't even run a brush through her hair, down in the dark, feeling around for the flour...
- "For me to take for all the guys to see."
- I can see that! "Hey, guys, I've got something the wife gave me!"
- Is it a new tie? Is it a set of tires?
- Nahhh- it's a sugar cake! Three layers, with a coconut cream filling!
- "Oh, that's just ducky!," they all say, and they crown him with it.

MARINUS VAN DER LUBBE
Marinus (Rinus) van der Lubbe
(13 January 1909 – 10 January 1934
) was a Dutch council communist convicted of, and executed for, setting fire to the
German Reichstag building on 27 February 1933, an event known as the
Marinus van der Lubbe was born in Leiden in the province of South Holland.
He was born with learning difficulties,. His parents were divorced and, after his mother died when he was 12, he went to live with his half-sister's family. In his youth, van der Lubbe worked as a bricklayer.
He was nicknamed Dempsey after boxer Jack Dempsey, because of his great strength.
At his work, Van der Lubbe came in contact with the labour movement; in 1925, he joined the Dutch Communist Party (CPN), and its youth section the Communist Youth Bund (CJB).
In 1926, he was injured at work, getting lime in his eyes, which left him in hospital for a few months and almost blinded him. The injury forced him to quit his work, so he was unemployed with a pension of only 7.44 guilders a week. Not being able to live off this, he was forced to take occasional jobs.
After a few conflicts with his sister, Van der Lubbe moved to Leiden in 1927. There he learned to speak some German and founded the Lenin house, where he organized political meetings. While working for the Tielmann factory a strike broke out. Van der Lubbe claimed to the management to be one of the ringleaders and offered to accept any punishment as long as no one else was victimised, even though he was clearly too inexperienced to have been seriously involved. During the trial, he tried to claim sole responsibility and was purportedly hostile to the idea of getting off free.
Afterwards, Van der Lubbe planned to emigrate to the Soviet Union, but he lacked the funds to do so. He was politically active among the unemployed workers' movement until 1931, when he fell into disagreement with the CPN and instead approached the Group of International Communists.
In 1933, Van der Lubbe fled to Germany to take action in the local communist underground.
He had a criminal record for arson.
Van der Lubbe said that he set the Reichstag building on fire as a cry to rally the German workers against fascist rule. He was brought to trial along with the head of the German Communist Party and three Bulgarian members of the Comintern. At his trial, Van der Lubbe was convicted and sentenced to death for the Reichstag fire. The other four defendants (Ernst Torgler, Georgi Dimitrov, Blagoi Popov, and Vasil Tanev) at the trial were acquitted. He was guillotined in a Leipzig prison yard on 10 January 1934, three days before his 25th birthday. He was buried in an unmarked grave on the Südfriedhof (South Cemetery) in Leipzig.

Historians disagree as to whether Van der Lubbe acted alone, as he said, to protest the condition of the German working class. The Nazis blamed a communist conspiracy. The responsibility for the Reichstag fire remains an ongoing topic of debate and research. According to Ian Kershaw, writing in 1998, the consensus of nearly all historians is that Van der Lubbe did, in fact, set the Reichstag fire.
Although Van der Lubbe was certainly an arsonist, and clearly played a role, there has been considerable popular and scientific debate over whether he acted alone. William Shirer writing in
"The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" surmises that van der Lubbe was goaded into setting a fire at the Reichstag, but the Nazis set their own, more elaborate fire at the same time. The case is still actively discussed.
Never-the-less- Hitler used this event to gain 100% control of the German government. We know what the outcome was.

PEG ENTWISTLE JUMPED OFF THE HOLLYWOOD SIGN 84 YEARS AGO~ TODAY
"Peg" Entwistle
(5 February 1908 – c. 16 September 1932)
Welsh-born English stage and screen actress. Entwistle began her stage career in 1925, appearing in several Broadway productions. She appeared in only one film, Thirteen Women, (in the film she commites suicide)
which was released after her death. Entwistle gained notoriety after she jumped to her death from the "H" on the Hollywoodland sign
in September 1932, at the age of 24.
Peg Entwistle played the role of "Hedvig" in Henrik Ibsen's The Wild Duck during 1925. After seeing the play, a young wanna be acrtress named Bette Davis told her mother,
"...I want to be exactly like Peg Entwistle."
Some years later Broadway director Blanche Yurka sent a note to Davis asking if she would like to play Hedvig and she sent word back that ever since she had seen Entwistle in
The Wild Duck, she knew she would someday play Hedvig.
Through the years Davis said Entwistle was her inspiration to take up acting.
In April 1927 Entwistle married actor Robert Keith at the chapel of the New York City Clerk's office. She was granted a divorce in May 1929. Along with charges of cruelty, she claimed her husband did not tell her he had been married before and was the father of a six-year-old boy, Brian Keith, who later became an actor,
(famous for his role in the 60s TV series Family Affair) and who himself committed suicide.
and drawn from the novel by Tiffany Thayer.
Entwistle played a small supporting role as Hazel Cousins. It premiered on 14 October 1932, a month after her death, at the Roxy Theatre in New York City and was released in Los Angeles on 11 November to neither critical nor commercial success. By the time it was re-released in 1935, 14 minutes had been cut from the film's original 73 minute running length. In 2008 Variety magazine cited
Thirteen Women as one of the earliest "female ensemble" films.
Thirteen Women as one of the earliest "female ensemble" films.
On 18 September 1932, an anonymous woman telephoned the Los Angeles police and said that while hiking she had found a woman's shoe, purse and jacket below the Hollywoodland sign (now known as the Hollywood Sign). The woman said she looked in the purse and found a suicide note. She then said she looked down the mountain and saw a body. According to a police transcript of the call, the woman said she "wrapped a jacket, shoes and purse in a bundle and laid them on the steps of the Hollywood Police Station."
A detective and two radio car officers found the body of a moderately well-dressed, blonde-haired, blue-eyed woman in a ravine below the sign. Entwistle remained unidentified until her uncle (at whose Beachwood Canyon home she had been living) connected her two-day absence with the description and initials "P.E." on a suicide note which had been found in the purse and published by the newspapers.
He said that on Friday, 16 September she had told him she was going for a walk to a drugstore and see some friends. The police surmised that instead she made her way to the nearby southern slope of Mount Lee to the foot of the Hollywoodland sign, climbed a workman's ladder to the top of the "H" and jumped. The cause of death was listed by the coroner as "multiple fractures of the pelvis."
The suicide note as published read:
it would have saved a lot of pain. P.E.""I am afraid, I am a coward. I am sorry for everything. If I had done this a long time ago,
Entwistle's death brought wide and often sensationalized publicity. Her funeral was held at the WM Strathers Mortuary in Hollywood on 20 September.
Her body was cremated and the ashes were later sent to Glendale, Ohio, for burial next to her father in Oak Hill Cemetery, where they were interred on 5 January 1933.
In 2014, roughly one hundred people marked the anniversary of Entwistle's death by gathering in the parking lot of Beachwood Market in Hollywood to watch
Thirteen Women on an outdoor screen. Proceeds from a raffle and from food and beverages sold at the screening were donated to the
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in Entwistle's name

INTERSEX ATHLETES DO IT BETTER
Heinrich Ratjen, born Dora Ratjen, was a German athlete who competed for Germany in the women’s high jump at the 1936 Summer Olympics at Berlin, finishing fourth, but was later discovered to be male.
He set a world record for the high jump at the 1938 European Athletics Championships, but competed as a female at that event. His true identity was discovered while riding on a train headed for Cologne.
Ratjen was born in Erichshof, near Bremen, into a family described as “simple folk”. The father, Heinrich Ratjen, stated in 1938: “When the child was born the midwife called over to me, ‘Heini, it’s a boy!’ But five minutes later she said to me, ‘It is a girl, after all.’” Nine months later, when the child, who had been christened Dora, was ill, a doctor examined the child’s genitalia and, according to Heinrich, said “Let it be. You can’t do anything about it anyway.” Dora stated, also in 1938: “My parents brought me up as a girl [and] I therefore wore girl’s clothes all my childhood. But from the age of 10 or 11 I started to realize I wasn’t female, but male. However I never asked my parents why I had to wear women’s clothes even though I was male.”

A STAR IS BORN- 1937
A STAR IS BORN
(1937)
this version is based on the pre-code 1932- version-

then again in 1976 with barbara striesand & kris kristofferson.
A Star Is Born
1937 American Technicolor romantic drama film produced by David O. Selznick,
directed by William A. Wellman from a script by
Wellman, Robert Carson, Dorothy Parker and Alan Campbell.
starring Janet Gaynor as an aspiring Hollywood actress,
and Fredric March as a fading movie star who helps launch her career.
The supporting cast features Adolphe Menjou, May Robson, Andy Devine,
Lionel Stander and Owen Moore.
A Star Is Born was filmed from October to December 1936 with an estimated budget of $1,173,639, and premiered in Los Angeles, California on April 20, 1937
The film's New York premiere took place two days later at Radio City Music Hall.
It is not known how much Dorothy Parker contributed to the finished script. When she first saw the film, Parker was proud of her contribution and boasted about both the script and the film, but in later life she believed that she had contributed nothing of significance.
Early in their careers, Budd Schulberg (then a script reader for David O. Selznick) and Ring Lardner, Jr. (who was working in Selznick's publicity department) were assigned to write some additional dialogue for the film, a collaboration which produced Janet Gaynor's (and the film's) final words:
"This is Mrs. Norman Maine."
The line was used again in the 1954 Warner Bros. musical remake starring Judy Garland and James Mason. George Cukor, who directed the remake, suggested adding the scene in the 1937 film where Menjou offers the fading star a supporting role.
Some film historians believe that the marriage of Barbara Stanwyck and Frank Fay was the film's real-life inspiration. John Bowers has also been identified as inspiration for the Norman Maine character and the dramatic suicide-by-drowning scene near the end of the film (Bowers drowned in November 1936). The film contains several inside jokes, including Gaynor's brief imitations of Greta Garbo, Katharine Hepburn, and Mae West; the "Crawford Smear", referring to Joan Crawford's lipstick; and the revelation that the glamorous Norman Maine's real last name is Hinkle. (Hinkle was the real last name of silent film star Agnes Ayres, and not far removed from Fredric March's real last name, Bickel.)
This film also has some similarity to the earlier film What Price Hollywood? (1932), released by RKO Radio Pictures. The 1932 film's original title was The Truth About Hollywood based on a story by Adela Rogers St. Johns. St. Johns loosely based her plot on the experiences of actress Colleen Moore and her husband, alcoholic producer John McCormick (1893–1961), and the life and death of director Tom Forman, who committed suicide following a nervous breakdown.
Four years after What Price Hollywood? was released, Selznick approached George Cukor and asked him to direct A Star Is Born. Cukor felt the plot was too similar to What Price Hollywood? so he declined. RKO executives considered filing a plagiarism suit against Selznick International Pictures because of the similarities in the story, but eventually chose not to take legal action. Cukor later directed the 1954 musical remake starring Judy Garland.
A common Hollywood myth about the film is that Lana Turner appeared as an extra in one of the scenes in the film. Turner often denied the myth over the years, mentioning that she was discovered several months after the picture had finished production.
