The Green Carnation
was popularized in 1892 when Oscar Wilde instructed friends and actors to wear a dyed green carnation on their lapels for the opening night of his play Lady Windermere's Fan.
Because homosexuality was criminalized and dangerous during the Victorian era wearing the unnatural dyed green flower served as a subtle secret code and quiet signal among queer men.
Wilde also suggested the color represented artistic subtlety artificiality over nature and the ideals of the aesthetic movement
tea & cucumber sandwiches will be served
