Aubrey  Beardsley 
 (21 August 1872 – 16 March 1898)  
English illustrator and author. 
 His drawings in black ink, influenced by the style of Japanese woodcuts, 
 emphasized the grotesque, the decadent, and the erotic.  He was a leading figure in the Aesthetic movement which also included Oscar Wilde and James A. McNeill Whistler. 
Beardsley's contribution to the development of the Art Nouveau and poster styles was significant, despite the brevity of his career before his early death from tuberculosis.

Oscar  Wilde 

(16 October 1854 – 30 November 1900)

 prolific Irish writer who wrote plays, fiction, essays, and poetry.

 He became one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. 

 Known for his biting wit, flamboyant dress and glittering conversation, Wilde became one of the best-known personalities of his day. At the turn of the 1890s, he refined his ideas about the supremacy of art in a series of dialogues and essays, and incorporated themes 

of decadence, duplicity, and beauty.

Wilde had his first full homosexual relationship with Robbie Ross, Wilde had taken an interest in same sex relationships. 
He met and kissed Walt Whitman and had lived with the painter Frank Miles. 

Constance Wilde (January 2, 1859 – April 7, 1898), was Oscars wife and the mother of his two sons Vyvian and Cyril. Oscar rarely spent the night at home. 

 Alfred, Lord Douglas is the most famous of Oscars lovers.

There was also John Gray, a group of young poets & numerous rentboys~ prisoners & gamins throughout Oscar's life.

Oscar was, for his era openly gay - 
not the most sensible thing to be if you wanted to get on in Victorian England.

At the height of his fame and success, Wilde had the Marquess of Queensberry prosecuted for criminal libel. The Marquess was the father of Wilde's lover, Lord Alfred Douglas. 

 After two trials he was convicted and imprisoned for two years' hard labour,

 the maximum penalty. 

Oscar Wilde died destitute in Paris at the age of 46.

FRANKENSTEIN; OR, THE MODERN PROMETHEUS

 novel written by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley 

(1797-1851)

the story of scientist Victor Frankenstein, who creates a creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the story when she was 18.

 the first edition of the novel was published anonymously in London in 1818.

Shelley travelled through Europe in 1814, journeying along the River Rhine in Germany with a stop in Gernsheim (10 mi) away from Frankenstein Castle, where, two centuries before,

 an alchemist was engaged in experiments.

 Later, she travelled in the region of Geneva(Switzerland)—where much of the story takes place—and the topic of galvanism and other similar occult ideas were themes of conversation among her companions, particularly her lover and future husband, Percy Shelley. Mary, Percy, Lord Byron and John Polidori decided to have a competition to see who could write the best horror story.

 After thinking for days, Shelley dreamt about a scientist who created life and was horrified by what he had made; her dream later evolved into the novel's story.

Frankenstein is infused with elements of the Gothic novel and the Romantic movement. At the same time, it is an early example of science fiction. 

Since the novel's publication, the name "Frankenstein" has often been used to refer to the monster itself. However in the novel, the monster is identified by words such as "creature", "monster", "demon", "wretch," "abortion," and "it". Speaking to Victor Frankenstein, the wretch refers to himself as "the Adam of your labours", and elsewhere as someone who "would have [been] your Adam", but is instead "your fallen angel" (which ties to Lucifer in Paradise Lost, which the monster reads, 

and relates to the "modern" Prometheus of the book's subtitle).

Gaslight

 1944 mystery-thriller film, adapted from Patrick Hamilton's 1938 play Gas Light, about a woman whose husband slowly manipulates her into believing that she is going insane. 

The film was nominated for 7 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Actor, & Best Screenplay; 

it won the Academy Awards for Best Actress and Best Production Design.

The psychological term gaslighting, which describes a form of psychological abuse in which the victim is gradually manipulated into doubting his or her own reality, originated from the play and its two film adaptations.

 Gaslighting, today, mostly refers to one of the methods of abuse used by a narcissist to emotionally control a victim, through which the narcissist gains pleasure.

“SCHEELE GREEN"

The color green. Generally associated with good luck and four-leaf fucking clovers the color green was anything but good luck back in the 1800s. During the entire century and into the 1900s arsenic was used in all kinds of everyday products from wallpaper to paint as well as women’s clothing and beauty products. 

Originally known as “Scheele Green” in 1814 German company Wilhelm Dye and White Lead Company decided to try to modify the paint by adding arsenic and verdigris (a blue/green color that is made by using copper or brass to oxidize it). The new color was dubbed “emerald green” and was an overnight smash. It was soon being used for all kinds of things including dying dresses, shoes and flower hair accessories for women, among countless other products too numerous to mention. When the actual “recipe” for the dye was published in 1822 distributors attempted to temper the color as well as change its name so customers would keep using products that would eventually killmany of them. 

Due to their constant contact with the deadly dye, seamstresses and makers of flower hair accessories were especially susceptible to the dangers of getting up close and personal with arsenic and would pay for it by developing horrific lesions on their skin or face. And they were the lucky ones. Death from arsenic poisoning was preceded by vomit that was a distinct shade of green, foaming at the mouth and convulsions. All things considered, as bad as things are now, they really seemed a whole lot worseduring a time when looking good could literally kill you. I’ve included many images in this post of vintage garments, shoes and other items that drastically cut the average life-expectancy of a lot of ladies and anyone who liked cake because guess what? Arsenic was also used to color cake icing back in the 1800s! If this kind of historical weirdness is your kind of thing I highly recommend picking up the book Fashion Victims: The Dangers of Dress Past and Present by Alison Matthews David.
