Activist Harry Hay
11:00 a.m. Dedication
of “The Mattachine Steps,” just below Harry Hay’s 1950’s home, site of the
founding of the Mattachine Society in 1950. Widely acknowledged as “the father
of the modern gay movement,'” Hay would later co-found the Radical Faeries in
1979. This ceremony will be hosted
by FAELA -- Radical Faeries of Los Angeles, local community activists, and will include remarks by LA City
Councilman Eric Garcetti. Location:
The foot of the Cove Avenue Steps in Silver Lake, at Silver Lake Boulevard
& Cove Avenue.
NOON Potluck Picnic-in-the-Park. Bring food to share, friends,
kids...just no alcohol or dogs, please. (cancelled in the event of rain). Location:
Just across the street from the Cove Avenue Steps, overlooking Silver Lake
Reservoir (east side).
2:30 p.m. Book
Signing & Reading of Stuart Timmons’ newly updated biography, The
Trouble with Harry Hay. Location:
Stories Books, 1716 Sunset Boulevard, Echo Park (easy parking behind the
store).

i love the desert with a cup of frozen yogurt,
and seeing all the stars glinting in their invisible blanket of night

CHRISTIAN DEATH
ROZ WILLIAMS
The band was founded and fronted by Rozz Williams.
On November 6, 1963, Rozz Williams was born Roger Alan Painter in Pomona, California, and was raised in a strict Southern Baptist family with his three older siblings (one sister, two brothers) in Pomona, California. As a child, he was a fan of David Bowie, Roxy Music, T.Rex, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, and The New York Dolls. When he reached adolescence in the late 1970s, he became attracted to the punk rock music scene. In his teenage years, he found the name "Rozz Williams" on a Pomona gravestone and decided to use it as his own.
On April 1, 1998, Williams hanged himself in his West Hollywood apartment. His body was discovered by
Ryan Wildstar, his friend and roommate of seven years. Also present were Sindie Ardia, his childhood friend and her husband (at that time) Sydney B. Lanex. Williams was 34.
A memorial was held at the El Rey Theatre shortly after his death, and a small gathering of family and friends offered his ashes to the earth at Runyon Canyon Park in the Hollywood Hills.
CHARLOTTE RAMPLING
Her career spans four decades in English languageas well as French and Italian cinema.
Despite an early flurry of success, she told The Independent, "We weren't happy. It was a nightmare, breaking the rules and all that. Everyone seemed to be having fun, but they were taking so many drugs they wouldn't know it anyway."
Rampling has performed controversial roles. In 1969, in Luchino Visconti's The Damned (La Caduta degli dei), she played a young wife sent to a Nazi concentration camp. Critics praised her performance, and it cast her in a whole new image: mysterious, sensitive and ultimately tragic. "The Look" as co-star Dirk Bogarde called it, became her trademark.
In 1974's The Night Porter she portrayed a former concentration camp inmate who after the war meets a former camp guard with whom she had an ambiguous relationship, and their relationship resumes. Bogarde played the camp guard. In Max mon amour, she played a woman who fell in love with a chimpanzee.

In 1974, Rampling was quoted by the syndicated columnist Earl Wilson as saying: "There are so many misunderstandings in life. I once caused a scandal by saying I lived with two men....
