RICK TAKES A TRAIN TRIP

JAN 4TH, 2O1O

we get up @ the crack of dawn, (actually 7:30am) to go on our road trip! brush our teethes, feed the huskies and we're flying down the mountain to pick up matt, who is all excited and ready to go. and we're off!

(the sights & sounds of espanola)

we drive approx. 2 hours to a little town called ESPANOLA. the city has a bad rep of being the east LA of new mexico, and heroin capital, but i am curious. i'm convinced that the interesting things these days no longer happen in large cities, but in small towns. that's where artists can afford to create, and not have all their income go to living expenses. espanola is also where the LOW RIDER was invented.

(big dawgs restaurant)

(raymond's van in front of big dawgs restaurant)

"i'm hungry," i announce so we look for a good, local place to eat... raymond and i are pretty good @ finding cheap/good food and we do it once again. a little diner called BIG DAWGS. the chili was amazing- and i mean amazing! bright red- hot, but not too hot, and the green chili was even better. raymond is impressed and it's hard to impress him when it comes to chili.

(big dawg's portrait)

big dawg's portrait is above our table.... i'm guessing he was a gang member who was shot in a drive-by. i could be totally off the mark, but that is my guess. they have the best recreation of the sistine chapel's CREATION OF ADAM- that i have ever seen, and i do love "muriels."

(me in front of the "muriel," recreation of michaelangelo's- creation of adam)

we take in a few more sights & sounds of espanola, everyone is intrigued with the place.. don't get me wrong, it's a pit, but an intriguing pit.

(the sights & sounds of espanola)

our next stop is EL SANTUARIO DE CHIMAYO they have RELIGIOUS DIRT. as the lore goes, In the early 19th Century, nineteen families lived in what was then called El Potrero de Chimayó (potrero means pasture).

(matt & i in front of el santuario de chimayo)

when the missionaries first came to this area, they found a relic, (fetish?!) with a beam of light shining brightly upon it. accepting this as a miracle, they build the church on this spot, after completion the spot was still illuminating. the priesty's decided that this was a sign from god and left a hole in the floor with the exposed dirt. the locals began to come by this now sacred room and take dirt from the hole, believing it to have healing properties. eventually people would make pilgrimages here to cure any ailment they and their loved ones might have.

that is my take on it, here is the official press release-

The land where the Santuario now stands belonged to Don Fernando Abeyta, one of the first members of Los Hermanos de la Fraternidad Piadosa de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno (the Penitentes) in the area. Also, he was probably devoted to the Christ of Esquipulas, a pilgrimage site in Guatemala where the clay is ascribed healing power.

Fernando Abeyta built a small chapel to the Christ of Esquipulas on the present site around 1810. On November 15, 1813, he wrote to Father Sebastián Álvarez, the parish priest of Santa Cruz de la Cañada, asking him to write to the Episcopal See of Durango for permission to build a bigger church in which the people of El Potrero could worship Jesus as he appeared at Esquipulas and could hear Mass The next day, Fr. Álvarez wrote the letter, mentioning that cures were reported and many pilgrims were arriving.

Abeyta's daughter, Carmen Abeyta de Chaves, inherited the property and kept it despite an attempt to force her to give it to the Church; a major source of her income was donations from pilgrims. Her daughter, María de los Ángeles Chaves, inherited it in turn and was the owner as of 1915. In 1929, when the owners were in financial trouble, members of the newly formed Spanish Colonial Arts Society bought the property and donated it to the Archdiocese of Santa Fe.

Many visitors to the church take a small amount of the "holy dirt", often in hopes of a miraculous cure for themselves or someone who could not make the trip. Formerly, at least, they often ate the dirt. (Likewise pilgrims to the original shrine of Esquipulas eat the supposedly curative clay found there.) Now seekers of cures more commonly rub themselves with the dirt or simply keep it. The Church replaces the dirt in the pocito from the nearby hillsides, sometimes more than once a day, for a total of about 25 or 30 tons a year.

The Church takes no position on whether miracles have occurred at the Santuario.

Each year some 30,000 people from all over the world make pilgrimages to the Santuario de Chimayó, especially on Holy Thursday and Good Friday, some seeking blessings and some in fulfillment of a vow. Walking is traditional; some pilgrims walk from as far away as Albuquerque, about 90 miles... we drove.

rio de Chimayó was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1970.

(prosthetics & crutches from the past ailing visitors)

the room was pretty amazing, even for an heathen like me. i loved the way it looked and loved the idea of religious dirt. the adjoining room had numerous crutches, prosthetics and locks of hair from the many past ailing visitors.
we then check out the local shops and relics. the entire area had a beautiful glow.. it was an amazing experience, very organic.

we drive back to espanola. we just can't get enough. raymond wants to buy local red chilies. the chili stand is right next to a street called ROSEBUD. we find that very amusing.. can you guess why?

( local red chilies @ rosebud lane)

raymond is excited to take a photo of this dive bar called SAINTS & SINNERS. btw- there is also a saints & sinners in culver city.. i'm thinking the owners visited espanola and knocked off the name & sign.

(raymond & i in front of saints & sinners)

we decide to go into the bar and are very pleasantly surprised. saints & sinners is a gourmet liquor store with an incredible selection of spirits, wine, hard liquor, soft liquor, beer and gourmet sodas.

(me & dennis- owner of saints & sinners)

they have one table which the owner dennis calls "the bar." dennis also tells us that he has owned saints & sinners since 1965!!.. a few years back the roof began to leak so he closed the bar section of the building to repair it.. one thing lead to another and he never repaired or reopened the bar. so we sit with at the one table with a local and shoot the bull, drinking root bear, locally brewed beer and munching on blue corn- popcorn. it was a blast.

matt, raymond & i, - happy hour @ saints & sinners)

we have a leisurely, beautiful drive home taking the scenic route. matt is starting to work my nerves.. he can be fun, and then other times he is such a spoiled, trust funded republican dumbo.. all his taking points are directly out of fox news. as we past this beautiful area called, VALLES CALDERA. he insists that george bush made it a national park. i know for a fact that clinton was responsible and signed the bill in 2000.

(me & kia, chauegha & azula)

once back home, raymond makes this INCREDIBLE meal. blue corn chicken tacos with homemade guacamole, salsa and red chili.. WOW.. what a meal.. he must be the best cook in new mexico. i curl up with raymond's three huskies dogs and watch john waters's A DIRTY SHAME with matt, who complains about how weird it is the entire time. i go online and find confirmation that clinton did indeed sign valles caldera as a national park. i email this info to matt.. we will see what neocon response he has.

RICK TAKES A TRAIN TRIP

JAN 3RD, 2010

i go to pick up raymond @ work- LOS OJOS BAR.

i walked... beautiful snow... walk past raymond's neighbors, which is a priests retreat. for priests that need to be away from urban areas and are in desperate need of retreat, rest & reconciliation, (if you know what i mean). nobody is there that i could tell... then past the nunnery called- HANDMAIDENS OF THE PRECIOUS BLOOD. they have a meditation path that i like to call THE NUN WALK, a long marked straight & narrow trail where you contemplate life and your sins. at the beginning of the nun walk is the SISTER CEMETERY, a graveyard for all the little nuns that have pasted on to be with their father. raymond's friend luanna told me her catechism teacher is buried there... small town.

(handmaids of the precious blood- nunnery)

as i'm walking midway down the nun walk. suddenly all these church bells go off! ringing, ringing , ringing- perhaps the nunnies are upset that i am an intruder on the premises? i am in all black so perhaps from their gilded tower i look like the black crow beelzebub come to tease & taunt them. i just keep walking.. i figure that by the time the local police responds to all the bell ringing i'll be long gone.

i'm now in downtown jemez, population 225. the first time i was here in 2006, the pop was 125... so apparently allot of fornicating has been going on.

raymond works @ the LOS OJOS BAR, (named one of the top ten bars of america by esquire magazine!?) a real classic bar- straight out of the old west. allot of natural wood, tree stump bar stools.. high on atmosphere, good, strong drinks, ok food and allot of local characters.

raymond is not done with his shift so i go across the street to the JEMEZ MOUNTAIN INN, run by luanna & paul. they are a real fun couple. apparently they came up here about 15 years ago and the desk clerk @ the time would not allow them to stay. who knows why, perhaps because they were a mixed race couple, or too hippy radical, or too swinger, or too free spirit, for whatever the reason they were denied a room. as they were leaving paul noticed the business was for sale. a month or so later paul came back and was pleased to tell the desk-clerk. " guess what?" i am now the new owner of jemez mountain B&B. you're fired."

(the jemez mountain inn)

i go back across the street to los ojos with luanna, paul and their german friend ingrid. she is very sweet, ingrid is from hamburg and moved to jemez springs recently after her husband passed away from cancer. apparently he was a real good- looker,

ingrid gives me 3 chocolate pigs for good luck. one for raymond, one for tim and one for me. i give them the flesh colored pigs and keep the black chocolate pig for myself. i still have it!

at the los ojos bar were are having a blast. raymond's friend's a cute couple called vicki-vicki and her BF mike join us and we are just chatting it up.

mike is native apache & cherokee and is in a band called TRANSFRICTION. he gave me a CD so we'll see what it's like.

(interior of los ojos bar)

raymond is now off work, he goes back home to put on his little "costume" i am taking him to high tea @ st frances tearoom in albq. i found it online.
we say our good-byes to all the jemezians and are off- down the mountain to albq....

finally i have cell phone reception. i'm now trying to call the st james tea room to make a reservation.. and no luck, not only can i not get a reservation, the tearoom is closed on sundays!
i am so depressed that we will not be having tea, and raymond & i are wearing our finest tea attire!

(old town- albq)
we meet raymond's BF- tim in old town and i break the bad news.. he is nonplused , even though he's wearing his best
BEN SHERMAN pull over shirt.

the three of us mill around old town trying to find an alternative, and it is freezing outside.. it's difficult to find a replacement for a proper high- tea.

we duck into a little bakery called THE DOUGHMAN... low & behold we have found a bastion of homos, ( all of 2) right in the middle of old-town albq.

so the doughman becomes our little high- tea replacement. the tea is bagged, but the bread pudding is excellent.

when we get back to the van the battery is dead. raymond left the lights on... i don't understand this since it's the middle of the day and very bright. i guess it's an albq custom. it seems to be very common place here to have car trouble.

luckily tim met us there in his own car so he gives us a jump.

raymond & i then head off to nob hill. the more trendy part of albq. we visit a shop that is an albq equivalent of wacko, ( in silverlake) and then this quaint, by overpriced antique shop called MORNINGSIDE ANTIQUES- run by this cute, but high-strung gay named christian. they do have some great pieces. i purchased a scarf. i will wear it every day.

(morningside antiques- owner- christian- he's a ghost figure!)

then raymond takes me to GARCIA'S for dinner. an authentic NEW mexican style restaurant. very good food, very local, very lowbrow. just the way i like it.

(garcia's kitchen)

tim finally joins us much later. he claims he was held up at b dalton bookstore because some young native was following him in the bookstore, then to his truck. then jumped into the passenger seat and begged to give him a blow job..... tim says the only way he could get him out of the truck was to take his phone# and promise to hook up with him later. i'm not sure if this is an accurate account of what happened, but i'm beginning to think that all of albq is gay!

RICK TAKES A TRAIN TRIP

12/30/09

6:45pm

well here i am all ready to go on my little train trip to albq, new mexico!

i took the red line one block from my home to union station and i'm now on the southwest chief @ amtrak ready to depart.... and we're off!

well i can't say i recommend coach seating, (except for the low price) very uncomfortable, too many peoples and children!

windslow- AZ- train station

trying to sleep with a group of old guys snoring, babies crying and an annoying women who keeps calling her BF and telling him EVERY boring detail of her trip! "hi honey, I'm in the fourth car from the dinning car. we just pasted barstow, i'm going to blow in your ear." finally @ around 11pm i had to politely tell her, " excuse me lady, could you go downstairs or something."

besides the physical discomforts, the visuals are amazing.. dark images of desert that you can barley make out so you have to image what the landscape might look like. lonely little towns with opulent train stations from more glamours past times. quiet little homes and trailers. all little gems.

12/31/09

5:55am

waiting for the dining car to open.... so hungry i could eat a horse. finally opens @ 6:30am. i have breakfast with a lady named bernadette, she is from north carolina, and coinkadinkally she was staying with her sister in los feliz! what are the chances. breakfast wasn't bad, considering.

gallup- new mexico

7:06am

watching the sunrise and the scenery is spectacular! ohmygod the sun against the snow covered desert of arizona is breathtaking.. it's so simple, so subtle, no one would ever travel out here just to experience this.. but it is fantastic. it is the subtle change that deepak chopra keeping taking about like a mantra in his book- healing the body & soul.. i'm reading this book.. yes i'm metaphysical.

11.45am

i arrive at the train station in albuquerque, new mexico! my final destination. raymond's- BF tim is supposed to pick me up, but my train is early and he is not here. so i decide to walk to gertrude zachary: a fine antique shop run by eccentric biddy- gertrude zachary. the last time i was in albuquerque she was not open. according to raymond, she is rarely open. well guess what? she is not open this time either.

albuquerque, new mexico- train station- my final destination!

gertrude zachary- fine antiques

tim pulls into the empty parking lot and away we go! tim is a bundle of hyperactive energy. or as he puts it, "obviously i'm more robust than elvis presley, but not in a corpulent manner."

1pm

tim drives briskly as i take-in the sites & sounds of albq NM, one of my fave places. i used to come here on a regular basis back in the 80s when i used to collaborate with art photographer joel-peter witkin. between LA & albq i helped put together 13 of joel's most famous images, including leda & the swan, (with the goddess bunny as model).

that was then, this is now- we stop off for tea @ bassass coffee.. tim says the coffee is good, (i don't drink coffee) the tea was fine, but do not order the scones! dry as a bone. they gave me my money back. albquerqueans are very accommodating.

we stop by and pick up matt. one of raymond's friends..... not my favorite person, but he'll do in a pinch. matt is a reborn republican from alta dena, california. apparently his grandfather or someone had money once upon a time, (hence the republican stance) now he is just plain ol white trash. looks kinda like the guy from married with children, likes to think he looks like edward norton. people in albq can also be somewhat delusional.

we drive up to jemez springs- HEAVEN ON EARTH! what a beauty of a gem of a gorgeous little hamlet. pass by all my favorite places- the bath house, (built in 1906 for john dillenger) jemez mountain B&B, (i wave to peter the owner) los ojos bar, (listed as one of the top 10 bars in america by esquire magazine!) the Buddhist retreat and meditation center, (natural hots springs!) and then raymond's house!!. i plod thru snow and there is raymond, busy @ work in his little workshop. what a magical soul he is. just sitting there in his little sanctuary. just like the TV series- everybody loves raymond.

i always wonder if he realizes what a fantastic area he inhabitants. most people always want what they don't have, so perhaps he longs for the big city lights.

now settled in at raymond's place, luanna & peter, (from the jemez mountain B&B) stop by. they are wearing santa hats & xmas lights around there bodies. they are a sweet couple.

later that night- raymond, tim, matt and i spend what i think was the best new years eve of all. sitting by the fire, chattin, drinking green tea,
( that i brought from tenren), sipping makers mark whiskey, listening to tim recite quotes from nietzsche, and watching the dvd of i am legend on my laptop, ( my friend rick owens did will smith's costumes.... btw will smith is gay... so is jada pikett) .
the new years moon is a blue moon. very rare will not happening again for a long time. it is good luck. a very good omen for 2010.

This New Year's Eve, there will be a blue moon in the sky. No, not literally blue; the term "blue moon" actually refers to when there are two full moons in a given calendar month, an astronomical rarity that occurs just seven times every 19 years, hence the famous phrase "once in a blue moon."

What's more, this New Year's Eve, people living in the Far East will see a lunar eclipse, making this an even rarer...er rarity. A blue-moon eclipse only happens once roughly every 15 to 20 years.

i am so happy! i love life.- HIPPY-PAPPY-HAPPY NEW YEAR.

1/1/2010

slept like a little baby boy in raymond's workshop, now my crib. tim & mat jabbered almost all night long, about who knows what... their chatter became my white noise. i wake up to the view of morning sunlit snow of raymond's front yard. a frozen stream and snow covered hills called the cat meza.

i get up around 7am.. tim is still up reading from 20 different books @ one time. 5 of them about nietzsche, one is about schopenhauer, also the canterbury tales, leviathan, blink and mein kampf, (?). well 19 out of 20 'ant that bad.

spent the entire day will tim & matt, chatting, watching movies and going online. relaxing and fun. oh also in attendance are raymond's 3 huskie dogs- kia, azula & chauegha.
