This rare quasi~doco chronicling a day in the life of a group of twenty-something Native Americans
who left reservation life in the 1950s to live in the district of Bunker Hill, Los Angeles, California.
Bunker Hill was by then a blighted residential locality of decayed Victorian mansions.
The film features Yvonne Williams, Homer Nish, and Tommy Reynolds.

Filming was done in 1958. The film features rock and roll music composed for the film and performed by The Revels.
The cast of American Indian actors are notable for their lack of self-consciousness as they drink and socialize during a night out on the town ending in a 49 party of drumming and dancing on "Hill X" overlooking downtown LA~ at the time~ chavez ravine, now dodger stadium.
Known to cinephiles, but remaining largely unseen by the public ~The Exiles has rich images of history that was once LA.

THE ORIGIN OF PYEWACKET

Pyewacket was one of the familiar spirits of a witch detected by the "witchfinder general" Matthew Hopkins in March 1644 in the town of Manningtree, Essex, England. Hopkins claimed he spied on the witches as they held their meeting close by his house, and heard them mention the name of a local woman. She was arrested and deprived of sleep for four nights, at the end of which she confessed and called out the names of her familiars, describing the forms in which they should appear. They were:
  • Holt, "who came in like a white kittling"
  • Jarmara, "who came in like a fat Spaniel without any legs at all"
  • Vinegar Tom, "who was like a long-legg'd greyhound, with a head like an Oxe"
  • Sacke and Sugar, "like a black Rabbet"
  • Newes, "like a Polecat"
  • Elemanzer, Pyewacket, Peck in the Crown, Grizzel, Greedigut, described as imps
Hopkins claims he and nine other witnesses saw the first five of these, which appeared in the forms described by the witch. Only the first of these was in the form of a cat; the next two were dogs, and the others were a black rabbit and a polecat – so Pyewacket was, presumably, not a cat's name. As for the other familiars, Hopkins says only that they were such that "no mortall could invent." The incident is described in Hopkins's pamphlet "The Discovery of Witches" (1647).
In the Hollywood film Bell, Book and Candle (1958) Pyewacket is the name of the cat/familiar of Gillian Holroyd (Kim Novak.
The original 1950 play starred Rex Harrison, his then wife Lilli Palmer, Jean Adair, and Larry Gates.

It is extremely popular among the Siamese Cat Lovers of the world. In 1956 during the popular craze over the Siamese breed Hollywood decided to cash in.
Cast with the hottest actress of the day, Kim Novak and James Stewart the first ever Siamese in film, Pyewacket would be stealing the show in the film Bell Book and Candle.
Kim Novak plays Gillian Holroyd, a Greenwich Village Witch who wants "something nice for Christmas" which her cat, Pyewacket brings her a mortal...
Jimmy Stewart plays Shep, the mortal that Gillian falls in love with and with the help of Pyewacket her magical familiar, she gets her man!
If this sounds a bit familiar to you, Bell Book and Candle success spawned Bewitched the series
In the 2008 computer game A Vampyre Story Pyewacket is the name of the familiar of the (missing, presumed dead) sorceress that used to own the castle where the game begins.

BLANK CITY

To celebrate the opening of BLANK CITY in Los Angeles, my doll of a friend from nyc via paree- CELINE DANHLER invited me to a special screening of her film- BLANK CITY at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA):

BLANK CITY tells the long-overdue tale of a disparate crew of renegade filmmakers who emerged from a moment in New York history. From the late 1970's through the mid 80's, when the city was still a wasteland of cheap rent and cheap drugs, these directors crafted daring works that would go on to profoundly influence the development of independent film as we know it today.

Directed by French newcomer Céline Danhier, BLANK CITY weaves together an oral history of the “No Wave Cinema” and “Cinema of Transgression” movements through compelling interviews with the luminaries who began it all. Featured players include directors Jim Jarmusch and John Waters, actor-writer-director Steve Buscemi, Blondie’s Debbie Harry, hip-hop legend Fab 5 Freddy, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, photographer Richard Kern as well as Amos Poe, James Nares, Eric Mitchell,
Susan Seidelman, Beth B, Scott B, Charlie Ahearn and Nick Zedd. Fittingly, the soundtrack includes: Patti Smith, Television, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, The Contortions, The Bush Tetras, Sonic Youth and many more.

blank city opens @ the nuart theater on may 27th.

IN REMEMBRANCE~ SUPER FREAK

RICK JAMES
(February 1, 1948 – August 6, 2004), was an American singer, songwriter, musician and record producer. James was a popular performer in the late 1970s and 1980s, scoring four #1 hits on the U.S. R&B charts performing in the genres of funk and R&B. Among his well known songs are "Super Freak" and "You and I". In addition to his music, James gained notoriety for his wild lifestyle, which led to widely publicized legal problems. Prior to his death in August 2004, James gained notoriety after comedian Dave Chappelle parodied the singer's 1980s drug-infused heyday with a series of stories told by acquaintance Charlie Murphy. These popularised the catch phrase "I'm Rick James, bitch".
