MEMORIES OF A STREAKER

Yesterday’s Crimes: The Murder of the Man Who Streaked at the Oscars

Artist and nudist Robert Opel was murdered in his SoMa art gallery five years after running on stage nude at the Oscars.

Host David Niven gets a surprise while introducing Elizabeth Taylor at the 46th Academy Awards.

David Niven struck a serious tone as he took the podium at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles during the 1974 Academy Awards ceremony.

“If one reads the newspapers or listens to the news, it is quite obvious that the whole world is having a nervous breakdown,” the London-born star of  “The Guns of Navarone” observed. A moment later, artist Robert Opel streaked across the stage buck-naked as if to prove Niven right.

Opel, his shaggy hair and mustache making him look like the most 1974 thing ever, flashed a peace sign as he ran through the TV camera frame, his junk bouncing up and down with each stride. The live audience both gasped and laughed, the band struck up a couple of bars of “That’s Entertainment,” and Niven recovered by making a quip about “shortcomings.” The show went on, and “The Sting” won Best Picture.

Instead of being taken to jail, Opel was whisked off backstage for a press conference.

“People shouldn’t be ashamed of being nude in public,” Opel remarked, standing in front of a towering Oscar statue. “Besides — it’s a hell of a way to launch a career.”

That career didn’t have much time left, however. Just five years later, Robert Opel was gunned down in his San Francisco art studio.

Opel moved to San Francisco from Los Angles after serving four months in county lockup for stripping naked in front of LA Police Chief Ed Davis, to protest the closing of nude beaches.

“The climate appears more conducive to civilized behavior,” Opel said about his new S.F. home. He opened Fey Way Studios at 1287 Howard St. in March 1978. With its exhibitions of works by Tom of Finland and Robert Mapplethorpe, Fey Way was an out gay art studio at a time when gay art was only shown in gay bars — even in San Francisco.  Opel’s gallery was dismissed as “a sex shop” by mainstream newspapers, when it was mentioned at all.

Opel also published a sex zine called “Finger,” and produced a play titled “The Heartbreak of Psoriasis” starring Divine. Ever the provocateur, he staged a mock execution of Harvey Milk assassin Dan White at UN Plaza during the Gay Freedom Day Parade on June 24, 1979 despite being reportedly warned not to by the S.F. police.

Around 9 p.m. on Sunday, July 8, 1979, Opel was entertaining friends  Anthony Rogers and Camille O’Grady at Fey Way when a pair of men armed with a handgun and a sawed-off shotgun showed up demanding drugs and money. Opel was known to supplement his artist’s income by selling amphetamines and PCP, but he didn’t have any drugs in the studio that night.

“Get out of my space,” Opel said, standing his ground.

“I’m gonna blow your head off,” the man with the pistol said.

“You’re going to have to,” Opel replied. “There’s no money here.”

O’Grady and Rogers, who were being held in a backroom by the man with the shotgun, then heard a shot followed by the thud of Opel’s body hitting the floor. Opel had taken a bullet to the head. He was pronounced dead at 10:40 p.m.

After the shooting, the bandits fled as other tenants in the building started coming down the stairs to see what was going on. The men made off with only $5 and a camera.

O’Grady, an artist herself as well as “The Leather Queen of Folsom,” drew sketches of the robbers and handed them over to police along with some other information told to her by a musician friend of Opel’s. Working from this and other tips, homicide inspectors soon identified the hold-up men as Maurice J. Keenan and Robert Kelly. The duo was arrested along with Keenan’s wife, Linda Holt, at SFO on July 10 as the suspects were trying to flee to Miami.

Keenan, who had beaten up and shot (but not killed) another man during a meth binge only three days before killing Opel, escaped from jail three times before the close of his murder trial. This has fueled speculation that Opel was killed as a part of a police conspiracy, however, Bay Area county jails experienced a wave of escapes at the time. Keenan was one of 12 inmates who broke out of San Francisco’s Hall of Justice at gunpoint on April 29, 1980. Of those 12, five including Keenan had escaped before.

As the triggerman, Keenan was given the death penalty, but the sentence was overturned on appeal in 2000. Keenan is now serving a life sentence.

But Robert Opel lives on, as the go-to image of 70s craziness in TV news segments.

ANTEBELLUM IN THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

Oscars Flashback: The True Story Behind 1974's Streaker

Issue 9 ENDPG Streaker - H 2014
Bettmann/CORBIS

ROBERT OPEL-- A conceptual artist, photographer and gay rights activist who burst onstage nude at the 46th acedemy awards-- had an unorthodox life and tragic demise.
This story first appeared in the March 7 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.
The year was 1974, and producer Michael Phillips had a good view of the stage during the 46th Academy Awards ceremony. He was nominated for Best Picture, and he was anxiously waiting forElizabeth Taylor to appear and announce the winner. Suddenly a thin, dark-haired naked man came streaking out from stage left waving a two-fingered peace sign.
In the ensuing uproar, it fell to co-host David Niven, a debonair Brit best known for his portrayal of Phileas Fogg in Around the World in 80 Days, to keep things moving along. As the streaker flashed the audience one last time before disappearing, Niven quipped, "Isn't it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?"
After the awards resumed and Phillips' movie, The Sting, won, a shocked Taylor approached him. "She was completely thrown by the naked man and she wanted to know if she flubbed her lines," Phillips toldThe Hollywood Reporter, "We had to reassure her that she was fine, and everybody had a good laugh."
The streaking incident became Hollywood lore overnight, and even now is widely cited as one of the Oscar's most memorable moments, thanks in part to Niven's quick riposte as the audience roared and tittered.
But the incident's notoriety is also due to the unorthodox life and tragic demise of the streaker himself, a conceptual artist, photographer and gay rights activist named Robert Opel. The Oscar streak wasn't Opel's first. As a member of the L.A hippy scene, Opel had shown up naked to a few Los Angeles City Council meetings to protest the ban on nudity at area beaches. He was active in the gay liberation movement and in art circles. And he had a gig as a part-time photographer for the gay newspaper The Advocate.
But the streak catapulted him to instant stardom, both in and out of the art world. Immediately after the stunt, which he had carried off by donning a jumpsuit and masquerading as an entertainment journalist, a freshly clothed Opel stood on "Winner's Row" and held a press conference with reporters, leading some to speculate later that the whole event had been a publicity stunt. There were other accolades. Opel appeared on the Mike Douglas show. And Allan Carr, who went on to produce Grease, hired him to streak a party for the Russian dancer Rudolf Nureyev.
Opel eventually landed in San Francisco where he established Fey-Way Studios, the nation's first openly gay art gallery in 1978. He welcomed avant-garde, controversial work, and was an early supporter of photographer Robert Maplethorpe and Tom of Finland, both of whom had shows at Fey-Way that year. But Opel's run was not to last. The very next year, Opel, who was just 40 years old at the time, was murdered when two men burst into the studio demanding money and drugs. They ushered Opel and two friends into a back room and tied them up. Then they shot Opel in the head.

Thirty years later, Opel's nephew and namesake, Robert Oppel -- his uncle had dropped one "P" to help protect his family name -- returned to the scene of the crime during the research and filming ofUncle Bob, the 2011 movie he directed about his famous relative. "He held me in his arms once," Oppel remembered, "But then he was murdered the year I was born." Oppel suspects that the killing may have been more than a simple robbery, though he can't prove it. The killers, both of whom are in jail, agreed to talk to Oppel for the film, but prison officials refused to grant permission.
In part to commemorate his uncle's famous stunt, last week Oppel opened up a tribute to Opel's work at a Hollywood art gallery.
("Robert Opel: The Res-Erection of Fey-Way Studios" will run at Antebellum Gallery through March 14th, 1643 Las Palmas Ave. 90028.)

LAST NIGHT @ ANTEBELLUM

last night @ ANTEBELLUM HOLLYWOOD
we premiered ROBERT OPEL: THE RES~ERECTION OF FEY WAY STUDIOS
this is a dream exhibit for antebellum.
when i was 14 years old i was watching the 1974 academy awards presentation. as david niven was about to introduce elizabeth taylor, a streaker ran by him as naked as can be. i was floored, as was the millions of people watching. to this day it is one of the most notorious live moments in tv history.
i later found out the streaker was  an artist named ROBERT OPEL.  he became a photographer for THE ADVOCATE, an editor for FINGER magazine, THE HOLLYWOOD STAR & DRUMMER.
the following year, (1975) robert entered his mr. penis character  to the CSW pride parade. during the early years the parade went down hollywood blvd and las palmas ave., where ANTEBELLUM HOLLYWOOD now resides.  for his efforts robert  was shunned, beat up and thrown in jail for public indecency. always the activist, robert then appeared nude in front of LA police chief ed davis, and the city council hearing for public nudity.  robert was jailed once again. this time for 4 months.
after his release robert reinvented himself and high~tailed it to san francisco where he opened the first homoerotic/fetish art gallery.
for one short glorious year FEY WAY STUDIOS presented artists,  (underground at the time) like~
TOM OF FINLAND, JOHN WATERS, ETIENNE, AJAY, REX, DIVINE, CAMILLE O'GRADY, CHARLIE AIRWAVES, ST. BERNARD, CHUCK ARNETT, ZACH,  WILLIAM MORITZ, BUD LAWSEN, ROBERT MAPLETHORPE and many more.

during the 1979  SF pride parade, robert opel created a live performance piece atop his float. dressed as dan white, he posed the question~
"if i, a gay, homosexual, pervert, cock sucker faggot shot an ex-cop what would happen to me?
would i get away with murder?"
two days later on july 7th, 1979, robert opel was murdered @ fey way studios.

the press said it was a drug deal gone bad, others close to him felt it was political retribution.

i've followed  the robert opel &  fey way story all my adult life. i even wrote a script!
i opened ANTEBELLUM HOLLYWOOD way back in 2005, with robert opel  & fey way studios as my role models.
now with the loving help of robert's nephew~ ROBERT OPPEL, i've realized my dream exhibition.
