Alla Nazimova  was born O.S. May 22, (or June 3. depending on the calendar) 1879.
she was a Russian actress, who emigrated to the United States in 1905.
On Broadway, she was noted for her work in the classic plays of IbsenChekhov and Turgenev.
at the height of her career- 1917- 1922-  she was the highest paid silent screen actress, (a weekly salary of  $10,000) and one of the first women directors & producers.
she gave rudolph valentino his first staring role, and also helped the career of anna may wong.
Nazimova openly conducted relationships with women, and her mansion on Hollywood’s Sunset Boulevard was believed to be the scene of outlandish parties. She is credited with having originated the phrase ‘sewing circle’ as a discreet code for lesbian or bisexual actresses.
her home eventually became the notorious hotel- THE GARDEN OF ALLA, (1927- 1959)

  1. A GREAT actress among other things. Overshadowed by the "no bodies" that followed. A true Gemini and the progenitor of so many things in Hollywood and Popular Culture so many take for "granted!" Not to forget, Nancy Regan's Godmother!
