Curator Rick Castro says~
"October is a time of year when the veil between the living world and the spirit world is at its thinnest, allowing spirits easy access to pass between both.
This tends to make Antebellum artists feel frisky!
witches & warlocks for centuries have received a bad rap.
Throughout the early modern period, the English term "witch" or "warlock" was not exclusively negative in meaning.
it is indifferent to say, 'she/he is a witch/warlock' or 'she/he is a wise woman/man'".
Some of the healers and diviners historically accused of witchcraft have considered themselves mediators between the mundane and spiritual worlds, roughly equivalent to shamans.
Such are people who teach magic and gives prophecies; and participation in battles against evil spirits, to win fertility and prosperity for the community.
Seance is an attempt to communicate with spirits, specifically meeting of people who are gathered to receive messages from spirits or to listen to a spirit medium.
Our spirits continue on with our sensuality intact. It’s all about longing and unrequited passion.
There’s a longing for something you can’t quite touch or see. People are drawn to it and fetishize it.”

SO excited to be a part of this group exhibition, and to be shown with these amazing artists. It's sure to be an unforgettable exposition, and the theme is so enigmatic - in what ways have these different artists across such a breadth of mediums and visual languages addressed the witches in their work? I guess we'll find out on Opening Night! - FWF
