"Tennessee" Williams III (March 26, 1911 – February 25, 1983)

 was an American playwright and author of many stage classics. He is considered among the foremost playwrights in 20th century American drama. Just a few of his written masterpieces include~

"streetcar named desire". cat on a hot tin roof" the glass menagerie," suddenly last summer, one arm and "desire & the black masseur".

After some early attempts at heterosexual relationships, by the late 1930s Williams had accepted his homosexuality. In New York he joined a gay social circle which included  many fellow homosexual writers, actors & artists~ the best of the 20th century.

"One of the most common bird tattoos that are popular these days are the sparrow tattoos. You would find that many people love these small, cute birds and get them inked onto their body. Deviating a bit from the sparrow tattoo meaning, a swallow tattoo used to be put onto the sailor’s arm to show his experience at sea. The swallow tattoo also linked a sailor with his family and his homeland, and was a symbol for true commitment. Like all other bird tattoo meanings, swallow tattoos also signify the same love for freedom and disregard for rules."

according to samuel steward~ SECRET HISTORIAN,(the current title for antebellum's fetish book club) the sparrow/bird tattoos were a subtle reference to the penis ~ something that other "inverts" would recognize as a code for homosex.

The End of Tennessee Williams: In Masks Outrageous and Austere

Let’s hand it to Tennessee Williams: he picked some of the best titles for his plays. A Streetcar Named Desire, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Night of the Iguana, Small Craft Warnings, Clothes for a Summer Hotel. The very last of his plays, In Masks Outrageous and Austere—it had never been produced prior to this recent Culture Project production, which just closed early due to mixed-to-negative reviews—is no exception; the title comes from a line in an Elinor Wylie poem, and it has both the rhythm Williams generally wanted and the sense, the peacock feathers and the steel. Williams worked on it for fives years, from 1978 to his death in 1983, when it passed into the hands of his friend Gavin Lambert, where it languished until Lambert’s death. Several people, notably Gore Vidal and Peter Bogdanovich, worked to get the play ready for production, and this vital premiere of it at the Culture Project was imaginatively directed by David Schweizer and acted to within an inch of its life by its star, Shirley Knight, for whom Williams wrote A Lovely Sunday for Creve Coeur.
