With a timeline of work spanning from the 80’s till present day, L.A based Rick Castro's work echos the zeitgeist of it’s time. Raw and viscerally emotive, his stark photographic body of work often projects a fleshy, animalic (yet sometimes somber) perspective of the queer experience. Effortlessly gritty, layered and considered, Castro’s back catalogue transcends the typical tropes of BDSM or queer documentary style photography, creating a league of its own.
Pulling inspiration not only from the human condition but also literature, baroque religious imagery and even fashion, his work breathes a refreshing breath of sincerity as a true depiction of fetishists and BDSM. Boasting an impressive list of long time contemporaries and collaborators such as Rick Owens, Michele Lamy, Bruce LeBruce and Drag Terrorist Christeene, Castro’s trajectory as an artist continues to solidly his status as a queer icon and visual historian. Documenting pivotal societal moments such as the AIDS Crisis of the 80’s to rubbing shoulders with the modern day iconoclasts. Rick Castro makes his London return this week
