Rick Castro lives and works in Los Angeles his entire life.
Rick took his first photo of unknown model Tony Ward in 1986. From then on he immersed himself in creating homoerotic, fetish photography.
His first exhibition was at the original Different Light Bookshop in Silverlake California.
Approached by Durk Dehner from the newly created Tom of Finland Foundation,
Dehner became his first collector and published his first book entitled, Castro, (DPR press 1990).
His second book 13Years of Bondage: The Photography of Rick Castro, (Fluxion Editions, 2004)
features is his black & white nourish collection of BDSM fetish.
His photography was included in Rick Owens: Inhuman Subhuman Superhuman-
Triennale di Milano- 12/ 2017, and Queer Communion: Ron Athey, Participant Gallery, NYC, March, and ICA Los Angeles, August 2021.
Rick's photography was featured in the group exhibition AllTogetherNow: Archives at the Tom of Finland foundation, Venice, Italy, April
and May 8th, (Tom of Finland’s birthday) Community Centre, Paris, France, 2022.
Rick is the co-director and writer of Hustler White with Bruce Labruce, (1996), directed the documentary Plushies & Furries for MTV, (2001), and Channel 4UK, and the legendary videos Fertile Latoyah Jackson Video magazines staring Vaginal Davis, (1993- 1994)
Rick was the 2014 recipient- artist lifetime achievement award- Tom of Finland Foundation,
and he received artist grants from Department of Cultural Affairs, Los Angeles, and the City of West Hollywood, 2021.
This is Rick's first time exhibiting his photography in London!
