In the nineteenth century following the Napoleonic campaigns in Egypt,
French painters and writers suddenly developed a consuming passion for the East.
Fascinated by the splendors of the sultan’s court, excited by the mysteries of harems,
Jean-Léon Jérôme, Delacroix, Ingres and many others started to represent
Turkish baths, half-naked slaves,
the opulence of the Arabian Nights. Inspired by this Orientalist movement,
photographer Eric Lanuit reinterpreted its codes :
sparkling colors, languid bodies, warm and sensual lights.
Instead of goddesses and virgin slave-girls however, he prefers the beauty of dark and muscular princes, with their sensual and abandoned bodies, immersed in a picture
"perspirant the amber perfumes, musk and sandalwood of a harem of imaginary boys".
