Witches through the centuries have gotten a bad rap. Most extremely, they were 'tried' and murdered in 17th century Salem, Massachussetts. And of course pop culture misunderstands their pagan magical ways all the time... Except this month.
October is uniquely witchy. It's when the mainstream accepts the culture of magick for a brief fleeting moment, in order to cut loose and have fun around Halloween.
While I wouldn't go so far as to celebrate the mainstream culture's party-centric flirtation with witches and all things occultish, I do like that it makes fringe art shows like 'All of Them Witches' all the more acceptable and interesting to the average Angeleno.
The aforementioned is a group show taking place atAntebellum Gallery (1643 N. Las Palmas, Hollywood) from October 19th through November 3rd. The thematic work will cover a range of subjects under one occultish umbrella: witches, warlocks, supernatural occurences, seances, and other mystical subjects--all in the name of celebrating and understanding the witch/warlock as a wisewoman/wiseman.
Opening night will be particularly festive. Not only will intriguing artwork be on display, but there will be live performances between 7 and 9 p.m. There is a $5 cover for that inaugural evening. Exhibiting artists include, among others: Susan Kornfield, Jebbadiah Smith, Asa Fox, Newt Clements (whose work is featured here) and of course Renfield.
