THE FETISH OF YOGA

HEALTH/YOGA FOR DUDES
Me, Yoga and the Fetish Scene by Edward Vilga
For ten years in NYC, my yoga home base was the fabulous Laughing Lotus where I trained. The Lotus is a pink, orange, and fuchsia Chelsea Studio (with a new branch in San Francisco) run by the dynamic duo of partners Dana and Jasmine.

Right now in LA, however, I’m teaching at the Antebellum Gallery, billed as “the only fetish gallery in America, perhaps the world.”

My first class at Antebellum last month was during an exhibit entitled “The Look of the Male Nude” which featured about 50 photographs, paintings, and drawings of naked men. In direct contrast to the inviting, womb-like walls of the Laughing Lotus, my students practiced in front of dozens of penises and buff-male torsos and a bookcase of vintage gay porn. The contrast between the two environments couldn’t have been richer, although I thoroughly loved teaching students in both environments.

One of the many virtues of yoga is its supreme adaptability. I’ve personally taught yoga all around the world, from Guatemala to Crete, Miami to the Italian countryside, on the beaches of Mexico and in the urban jungle of the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

While the geographic versatility of yoga is fun to point out, I’m mentioning these drastically different yoga settings to illustrate that it doesn’t really matter where you do yoga––the choices are nearly infinite. What is important, however, is wherever you do it, the key to success really is a CONSISTENT practice.
