The Immoralist (French: L'Immoraliste)
is a novel by André Gide, published in France in 1902.
André Gide presents the confessional account of a man seeking the truth of his own nature
"caused a scandal" on its first publication in 1902.
Virtually unknown today over 100 years on, it still seems subversive and threatening.
The novel was adapted into a play of the same name by Augustus and Ruth Goetz.
The play had a Broadway-theatre production at the Royale Theatre in New York City,
from February to May 1954; starred Louis Jourdan, Geraldine Page
and the world debut of James Dean.
