WELCOME TO DETROIT
i will be the guest artist @ THE 11TH- DIRTY SHOW in DETROIT, MI.
i have never been to detroit, but have had a curosity for my entire life, since the race riots of 1967, the rise and fall of MOTOWN, DEVILS NIGHT RIOTS of the 80s & 90s, the film 8 MILE, (2002) and more recently when PATTi SMITH was asked this question in an interview-3/2010
Patti Smith Says NYC Is Closed, Find A New City
The Godmother of Punk recalled coming to New York in 1967 when she was broke and the city was "'down and out,' and you could get a cheap apartment and 'build a whole community of transvestites or artists or writers.'" But today, she says, "New York has closed itself off to the young and the struggling. New York City has been taken away from you. So my advice is: Find a new city like- DETROIT.
(devil's night in detroit)
DEVIL'S NIGHT is the night before Halloween. It is related to the "Mischief night" chiefly associated with the serious vandalism and arson seen in Detroit, Michigan from the 70s to the 90s.
Devil's Night dates as early as the 1930s. Traditionally, city youths engaged in a night of criminal behavior, which usually consisted of acts of vandalism (such as egging, soaping or waxing windows and doors, leaving rotten vegetables or flaming bags of animal feces on front porch stoops, or toilet papering trees and shrubs). These were almost exclusively acts of petty vandalism, causing little to no property damage.
However, in the early 1970s, the vandalism escalated to more devastating acts, such as arson.
The crimes became more destructive in Detroit's inner-city neighborhoods, and included hundreds of acts of arson and vandalism every year. The destruction reached a peak in the mid- to late-1980s, with more than 800 fires set in 1984, and 500 to 800 fires in the three days and nights before Halloween in a typical year.
