PUNK ROCK & NIGHTLIFE IN LA- CIRCA 1977 THRU 1987
PUNK ROCK appeared in los angeles during 1976.
i remember going to THE STARWOOD in west hollywood for what was being billed as THE FIRST PUNK ROCK EVENT in LA. the bands for the evening were DEVO, THE GERMS, BUTCH, THE SCREAMERS and others i cannot remember.
the audience consisted of about 35 to 40 people.
then in 1977, THE MASQUE opened on cherokee ave in hollywood, (one block east of antebellum gallery) PUNK ROCK now had it's own venue.
CLUB LINGERIE, CLUB 88, MADAME WONGS, HONG KONG CAFE and many other dives begin to allow punk musicians a place to be heard. punk music along with a vibrant nightlife consisting of locals, hollywood celebrities, and people soon to become celebrities, made this time frame- 1977 to 1987- the golden era for nightlife in los angeles.
i probably went out every night during this period.
photographer IVY NEY was a fxture at these events documenting as a freelancer for
THE LOS ANGELES TIMES.
ANTEBELLUM gallery is very excited to present the FIRST EXHIBITION of IVY NEY'S photographic collection entitled-
