THE GOLDEN HOUR
this is the time of day when the lighting is most flattering for portraits, people, fashion, etc.... photographers will go to great lengths and distances to find the perfect "golden hour."
HERB RITTS was obsessed with this time a day, and organized his shoots to accommodate this time- approx. 5pm til 7pm.. when the sun is on the west side, just prior to dusk.
it's amazing how beautiful someone can look with this lighting.
i know this because i worked as herb's wardrobe stylist throughout the 1980s, (1982- 1989) created numerous editorial and commercial shoots during this time. we chased that light for almost a decade.

As many a crewmember on a shoot knows, the Golden Hour can be a frantic time. My favorite related war story is one a friend told: one of his female stylist friends was on a beach shoot, helping a model change swimsuits in a frenzy behind a towel at the waterline, as the elusive sunlight was disappearing and a major photographer was nearing a tantrum. Mission accomplished, she hastily tucked tags, smoothed wrinkles, and lastly gave a quick, firm tug to one of those pesky, ever-present stray threads, this one being in the awkward spot near the model's crotch, looking like a tampon string.
ReplyDeleteIt was.
Neither said anything as the whole thing came flying out and she stared dumbstruck at it. A second later, it was as if it had never happened, the show must go on. The Golden Light waits for no one.
oh doll! leave it to you.. perfect anecdote for the GOLDEN HOUR.
