Sarah Palin's exit as Alaska governor stuns, puzzles observers
Her decision to quit later this month could jump-start or kill a bid for the presidency, political analysts say.
By Mark Z. Barabak and Robin Abcarian
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's abrupt announcement that she was quitting her job unleashed widespread speculation: Some said she was ready to launch a 2012 bid for president. Others suggested she had destroyed her chances with her startling decision.
Palin, speaking from the backyard of her lakefront home in Wasilla, Alaska, said Friday that she had ruled out seeking a second term and, for the good of the state, would step down at the end of the month and hand the job to her lieutenant governor.

THE LAST OF JACKSON
8-AD-MJ
THE LAST MICHAEL JACKSON PARTY?
BY JOHN ALBERT
The magician Rob Zabrecky is rail-thin, with raven-black hair and the piercing eyes of a B-movie hypnotist. To the unfamiliar he might appear eccentric, bordering on psychotic, though ever dapper in his modish, tailored suits. A year ago he was an up-and-coming rock & roll star. That’s all over. He’s now an up-and-coming magician, a calling with a much longer career span.
Zabrecky has a lot of obsessions: tap dancing, the Carpenters, avant-garde music from New York, and pop singer Michael Jackson. Last February, after performing in the nightclubs of Tokyo, Zabrecky returned to Los Angeles and the sort of uncertain financial future common to most professional entertainers. “With magic, the curve is very high,” Zabrecky explains. “You have your Siegfried and Roy, your Lance Burton and the guys who are on TV, and then there is everybody else, who are the working magicians and will take the birthday parties and corporate shows. It’s a lot of feast or famine.”
On the morning of February 21 Zabrecky’s phone rang. It was a producer he knew, Roy Johns. “I have a very interesting proposition,” Johns announced. “It’s for a major celebrity, and it’s a birthday party. Today.”

POP- the Gender-Free Child
Pop, the Gender-Free Child
By Amita Parashar
A Swedish couple are refusing to reveal the gender of their 2-year-old child.
In an interview with Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet, the parents said they believe gender is a social construction and their decision is rooted in feminist philosophy.
"We want Pop to grow up more freely and avoid being forced into a specific gender mold from the outset. It is cruel to bring a child into the world with a blue or pink stamp on their forehead," Pop's mother, 24, said.
"Pop," as the child is referred to in Swedish papers, is allowed to decide what to wear each morning. Additionally, the parents don't use personal pronouns when referring to their child.
Only a few close family members who have changed the child's diaper know Pop's sex.

PINA BAUSCH- RIP
PINA BAUSCH director of the wuppertal tanztheather died today
The German choreographer and dancer Pina Bausch died this morning at the age of 68, five days after being diagnosed with cancer.
According to a statement on Tanztheater Wuppertal's official website, Bausch took her last bow on the Wuppertal stage the Sunday before last.
Bausch was the artistic director of the Tanztheater Wuppertal, which she founded in 1973. She had a formidable international reputation as one of modern dance's greatest innovators. Her dance-theatre works include the melancholic Café Müller (1978), in which dancers stumble around the stage crashing into tables and chairs, and a thrilling Rite of Spring (1975), which required the stage to be completely covered with soil. Nelken (2005) was performed on a floor covered in flowers, while Palermo Palermo (1989) featured a line of dancers with apples balanced on their heads.
i have fond memories of seeing the los angeles premiere of PINA's performance back in 1986!
my companions for the evening? my then business partner MICHI, MICHELE LAMY and her then husband RICHARD NEWTON.

Allot has been said regarding the passing of social & pop icons, and how their deaths will affect the world.
I would like to now focus on our community, and comment on someone who touched my life and a smaller group of people by his recent passing.
ED MCANDREWS aka E.M.A was a Los Angeles artist who created images through photography. His subject of choice- Latino & Native American young men.
Ed was a very private person; in fact this is the first time his real name is being associated with his art.
Ed used the alias of E.M.A. (Ed Mc Andrews) as his title and stamp for all his photography.
Ed lived a very quiet life as an appraiser for LA County, residing for many years on Fountain Ave in West Hollywood. This small apartment was also his photo studio. He had recently moved to Atwater. As his long time hobby, Ed created amazingly erotic images that were sexy, lust-filled, classic and ironic all at once.
Ed’s images were very humorous- perhaps tongue-in-cheek, or just naive, (one never knew with Ed) they conveyed a
traditional erotically playful innocents like his predecessors, Bob Mizer @AMG, Bruce of LA, Mel Roberts & David Hurles @ Old Reliable.
Although Ed’s photos were contemporary, his usage of lighting and sepia toning created the aura of another era.
Ed was also an avid collector and seller of Antique Native American photography, and was perhaps one of the most knowledgeable persons in this genre.

Iraqi Forces FINALLY Assume Control Over Cities From US Troops
BAGHDAD -- (AP) Iraqi forces assumed formal control of Baghdad and other cities Tuesday after American troops handed over security in urban areas in a defining step toward ending the U.S. combat role in the country. A countdown clock broadcast on Iraqi TV ticked to zero as the midnight deadline passed for U.S. combat troops to finish their pullback to bases outside cities.
"The withdrawal of American troops is completed now from all cities after everything they sacrificed for the sake of security," said Sadiq al-Rikabi, a senior adviser to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. "We are now celebrating the restoration of sovereignty."
Iraqis celebrate in Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, 115 kilometers (70 miles) west of Baghdad, Iraq, June 29, 2009. U.S. troops will be out of Iraqi cities by June 30 in the first step toward winding down the American war effort by the end of 2011.
(AP Photos)
Fireworks, not bombings, colored the Baghdad skyline late Monday, and thousands attended a party in a park where singers performed patriotic songs. Loudspeakers at police stations and military checkpoints played recordings of similar tunes throughout the day, as Iraqi military vehicles decorated with flowers and national flags patrolled the capital.
"All of us are happy _ Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds on this day," Waleed al-Bahadili said as he celebrated at the park. "The Americans harmed and insulted us too much."
Al-Maliki declared a public holiday and proclaimed June 30 as "National Sovereignty Day."
The Pentagon did not offer any comment to mark the passing of the deadline.

STONEWALL- 2ND COMING- 2009
Texas LGBT Bar Raided by Police on 40th Anniversary of Stonewall
The Fort Worth Texas police department conducted a raid on the gay bar Rainbow Lounge on the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn raids, arresting seven people for public intoxication. Police have been accused of excessive force and 100 demonstrators showed up Sunday night in downtown Forth Worth to protest the raid.
Witnesses say one person was seriously injured and excessive force was used. Eyewitness Todd Camp talked to the Dallas Voice:
annual Turkish oil wrestling
Police disputed the accusation of excessive force and said the department would thoroughly investigate any allegations. The raid was one of three bar checks conducted by police and agents from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.
Police said two intoxicated individuals made sexually explicit moves toward officers and a third grabbed a TABC agent’s groin. Several patrons told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that the officers weren’t assaulted.
"He was just walking to the bathroom when an officer grabbed him and shoved him against a wall and pulled his head back," said Chris Hightower of Fort Worth told the Star-Telegram, a friend of the injured patron. "He was then thrown to the ground, and three other officers were on him."
Several patrons said the officers were never assaulted.
"I have friends who are cops, and I know what to do when officers are working," Camp said. "No one was acting aggressive to officers."
General manager Randy Norman said the bar had been open just a week, and it had complied with all ordinances.
"Rest assured the people of Fort Worth, or the government of Fort Worth -- will not tolerate discrimination against any of its citizens," Fort Worth Councilman Joel Burns stated to Fort Worth CBS 11 who has a news video report. He's now calling for accountability.
A Facebook Group has formed to keep the community abreast of the situation and informed of future demonstrations.
Witnesses say one person was seriously injured and excessive force was used. Eyewitness Todd Camp talked to the Dallas Voice:
The not awesome thing was the paddy wagon of homophobic police that showed up ... looking for trouble. My group and I were sitting on the back patio at a picnic table. Nobody was being wild out there. [The police] came through with flashlights, being loud asking what was going on out here, then asked why everyone was all the sudden being quiet. When one group started up their conversations again, they took one guy away. I left shortly after and as I walked through the front bar there were numerous cops with plastic handcuffs all ready to go. I [left] the bar and they [had] a big van in the parking lot and numerous cars on the street. And just so you know, it wasn't fire hazard crowded or seedy wild in there. ... The worst part is [friends later told me] that [the police] had numerous people face down on the ground outside. I just moved to Fort Worth from Dallas, so this is such a shock to me. I know Dallas would not put up with this. ... I am still so shocked it is 2009 and this just happened. One of the patrons who was arrested is reported by his sister to have been roughed up so badly that he's in the hospital, suffering from bleeding in the brain. “It doesn’t matter who you are or what kind of bar you are in,” she said, “none of this should have happened, to anybody. It’s excessive force, and it shouldn’t have happened."

RICK OWENS GOES DARK
as quoted from the LATIMEs- "Rick Owens' sophomore outing at men's fashion week here Friday found the designer easing up a bit from his Fall/Winter show (truthfully there wasn't much room to move in the other direction -- if the collection got any darker and heavier, it would risk collapsing in on itself and create a black hole)."
but the most revolutionary thing the LATIMEs totally missed from my long-time friend & exBF was that he did indeed get darker. in his choice of MODELS- BLACK MEN!
since i've known rick for over 25 years, he has never gone black. well, now as a true homage to america, rick has finally given up on those pasty-white, skinny aryan boys, and included some striking black males models. you know what they say rick, "once you go black, you don't come back," take it from me.
the LATIMEs aked him if there was anything "different: about his collection- "Yeah, I used taffeta this time, and I liked the way it turned out."
