LOS ANGELES, CA: DIRTY LOOKS, a New York-based platform for queer experimental film and video, will screen FEMALE TROUBLE at Human Resources gallery during a month-long residency by arts collective, My Barbarian. FEMALE TROUBLE is a selection of works that explore & explode normative roles of femininity and gender. With pieces that span five decades, these artists queer female subject space via drag tactics, narrative juxtaposition and overt performativity, with approaches ranging from masquerade to mythic, performance document to exposé video zine.

With Mario Montez Screen Test, Conrad Ventur resubmits Jack Smith/Warhol Superstar Mario Montez to Warhol's screen test format some 45 years later. Patti Podesta writes of her video Stepping, "I wanted to make something about risk, about repetition and a sort of lulling into nonsense of a very dangerous situation." Steven Arnold won the Best New Director award at the Cannes Film Festival for his film Messages, Messages continuing in the tradition of Cocteau and Anger, following its singular protagonist through a psychosexual labyrinth of libidinal delights and genderfuck costumery.
Matthias Müller's Home Stories culls from classic Hollywood Woman's Films like Written on the Wind, Madame X and The Birds, re-editing footage shot off the t.v. to examine the finite gestures and the repetitive interplays of genre (and gendered) cinema.
Narcissister's Every Woman is a performance document in which the artist dresses herself in the slinky feminine attire, which she unspools from every bodily orifice imaginable, all to Chaka Khan's ubiquitous anthem, of course. A chapter from Vaginal Davis and Rick Castro’s Fertile La Toyah Jackson "Aksionist Video Magazine," Barbi Twins documents an incongruous sister duo's Los Angeles exploits and lively recollections in true reportage form.
Z Drucker's short video, Fish, is a self-described "matrilineage of cunty white woman realness."
About Dirty Looks:
Dirty Looks is a roaming series held on the last Wednesday of the month. Curated by Bradford Nordeen, Dirty Looks is a screening series designed to trace contemporary queer aesthetics through historical works, presenting quintessential GLBT film and video alongside up-and-coming artists and filmmakers. Filling a gap in the regular programming of Queer experimental work in the New York film community, Dirty Looks receives roughly 65-100 visitors per month. A salon of influences, Dirty Looks is an open platform for inquiry, discussion and debate.
“Deliver us from Daddy! Dirty Looks sets its sights on artist film and video that pierces dominant narratives, wanders with deviant eyes or captures the counter in salacious glares.”
Throughout February, Dirty Looks will embark on a West Coast roadshow, visiting arts institutions like Artists’ Television Access (Feb. 10), The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (Feb 12), the Hammer Museum (Feb. 14), Human Resources Gallery (Feb. 16), Grand Detour (Feb. 23) and universities like California College of Arts (Feb 9), Otis College of Art and Design (Feb. 20) and Pacific Northwest College of Art (Feb 21).
About the Human Resources:
Human Resources is a team of creative individuals which seeks to broaden engagement with contemporary and conceptual art, with an emphasis on performative and underexposed modes of expression. Human Resources is entirely volunteer run and seeks to foster widespread public appreciation of the performative arts by encouraging maximum community access. Human Resources also serves as a point of convergence for diverse and disparate art communities to engage in conversation and idea-sharing promoting the sustainability of non-traditional art form
About My Barbarian:
My Barbarian is a Los Angeles based collaborative group consisting of Malik Gaines, Jade Gordon and Alexandro Segade. The trio makes site-responsive performances and video installations that use theatrical play to draw allegorical narratives out of historical dilemmas, mythical conflicts, and current political crises. In February, the group will install elements of their “Broke Peoples’ Baroque People’s Theater” project in the gallery, including sculptural objects and videos that meditate on poverty and excess. The installation will additionally serve as a site for performances, screenings, and events during the exhibition’s run.
About the artists:
STEVEN ARNOLD was an artist, photographer, filmmaker, muse and model of Salvador Dalí’s, and the center of a Los Angeles circle reminiscent of Warhol’s Factory. His films provide a bridge between the early cross-gender experiments of Claude Cahun and Pierre Molinier and what Gene Youngblood termed the “polymorphous subterranean world of unisexual transvestism,” which he saw as a hallmark of the emerging “synesthetic cinema” of the 1960s. The screening also pays homage to an innovative—yet often overlooked—poet of the Beat Generation, Ruth Weiss, who stars in all the films.
RICK CASTRO is an independent filmmaker & photographer living in Los Angeles. Rick's work explores the world of fetish and fringes of sex culture. His work has been published in artist editions, exhibitions and institutions worldwide. He is the director of numerous films and videotapes, including Hustler White (co-directed with Bruce La Bruce), Hellion Heatwave, Fertile La Toyah Jackson, and Three Faces of Women.
VAGINAL DAVIS was born and raised in Los Angeles, but now lives in Berlin. She is an accomplished experimental filmmaker, visual artist and writer, who Hilton Als of The New Yorker has called "the poet laureate of Santa Monica Blvd." She has curated programs for many film festivals including Berlin and Sundance. She teaches performance at Lund University's Malmö Art Academy (Sweden). She is also the subject of academic elucidation by Jose Muñoz in Disidentifications: Queers of Color and the Performance of Politics and Jennifer Doyle in Sex Objects: Art and the Dialectics of Desire.
ZACKARY DRUCKER is a limp-wristed, switch queen/Los Angeles-based artist. Infusing elements of installation, performance, text, photography, and video, Drucker's work explores under-recognized aspects of queer history while simultaneously inscribing her own experience and position within it. Drucker reactivates Bruce Rodgers' The Queens' Vernacular , documents relationships and secret legacies, and challenges conventions of entertainment and drag performance, as well as existing art-historical representations of queer people. Oscillating between documentary, mythology, and personal narrative, the work is an overall novel exploration of gender as it is constructed, deconstructed, and experienced.
MATTIAS MÜLLER is a German experimental filmmaker and curator, often working in the field of found footage. From 1994 to 1997 he worked as Guest Professor at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main (Germany), and from 1998 to 1999 at the Dortmund Fachhochschule. Since 2003 he is Professor for Experimental Film at the Academy of Media Arts (KHM), Cologne, Germany. For his films he has received numerous awards from many international festivals, including the American Federation of Arts Experimental Film Award in 1988, the Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival in 1996, the main award at the Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen in 1999, the Ken Burns “Best of the Festival“ Award at the Ann Arbor Film Festival in 2003, and the German Short Film Prize for Animation in 2006.
NARCISSISTER is a Brooklyn-based artist and performer. Her formative training took place at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. In addition to performance work, Narcissister does collage, sculpture, video art, and photography. Her studio residencies include The Whitney Museum IS Program, The Woodstock Center for Photography AIR Program, and the Art in General Eastern European Residency Program. Narcissister has also worked extensively as a commercial artist, designing window displays and working as a stylist and art director.
PATTI PODESTA's career is a continuing investigation of the intersection of art and film. Together with artist Bruce Yonemoto, Ms. Podesta co-founded the video program at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE). In the early 90s, she began designing feature films and this has become the focus of her career, the synthesis of her interest in the sculptural and the temporal, in architecture and in color. She has designed for the original and acclaimed film "Memento," the HBO film "Recount," "Smart People," and "Bobby." Ms. Podesta's work in film and video has been screened throughout the United States and Europe including the Museum of Modern Art, the Rotterdam Film Festival, the American Film Institute National Video Festival, the Pacific Film Archives and recently at LACMA and the UCLA Hammer Museum. Her work was included in the Getty Museum's historic "California Video" exhibition and catalogue. Born in Los Angeles, Podesta received a B.A. from Pitzer College and an M.F.A. from Claremont Graduate School.
CONRAD VENTUR currently lives and works in New York. He received his MFA from Goldsmiths College, London (2008) and has recently exhibited at Forever & Today Inc. New York (2009), The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh (2009); P.P.O.W, New York (2009); 1/9 Unosunove Arte Contemporanea, Rome (2009); Architecture Annual, Bucharest (2008); Arti et Amicitiae, Amsterdam (2008); Louis Blouin Institute, London (2008); Invisible-Exports, New York (2008); Ludlow 38, Kunstverein Munchen Goethe Institute, New York (2008); Somerset House, London (2008); and Stockholm Konsthall, Sweden (2008), among other international solo and group exhibitions. In 2004, Ventur launched the contemporary art magazine USELESS.

The 2-1 decision by a panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals found that Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot measure that limited marriage to one man and one woman, violated the U.S. Constitution. The architects of Prop. 8 have vowed to appeal.

The ruling was narrow and likely to be limited to California.

Nearly one and a half years since Federal District Court Judge Vaughn Walker declared Proposition 8 to be unconstitutional in the landmark Perry v. Brown case, the 9th US District Circuit Court of Appeals finally announced this morning that they will be upholding Judge Walker's decision: PROPOSITION H8 IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL!

“Proposition 8 served no purpose, and had no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California,” the court said.

The ruling upheld a decision by retired Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn R. Walker, who struck down the ballot measure in 2010 after holding an unprecedented trial on the nature of sexual orientation and the history of marriage.

In a separate decision, the appeals court refused to invalidate Walker’s ruling on the grounds that he should have disclosed he was in a long term same-sex relationship. Walker, a Republican appointee who is openly gay, said after his ruling that he had been in a relationship with another man for 10 years. He has never said whether he and partner wished to marry.

Mike Kelley, one of the most critically acclaimed artists of his generation,

has died at the age of 57, at his home in South Pasadena, Calif.

According to several sources close to the artist that Gallerist has spoken with,

the cause of death was suicide.

The artist had recently been selected for the 2012 Whitney Biennial,
an exhibition that he has participated in seven times in the past.
He has had major one-person exhibitions at the Whitney Museum,
the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Louvre, MUMOK,
Vienna, and numerous other museums.

A sergeant in the South Pasadena police department told Gallerist

that officers responded to the apparent suicide following a 911 call

made at 7:47 p.m. by a friend who had stopped by Kelley’s house

to check up on him.

The friend hadn’t heard from Kelley since Sunday and,

unable to gain entry to the home,

called the police. Kelley was pronounced dead on the scene.

Though police records show no mention of a note, officers said

the friend who called 911 mentioned that Kelley had been

depressed following a September break-up.

Kelley’s work spanned numerous mediums and source materials,
encompassing unorthodox objects from sculptures made of
knitted stuffed animals (which provided the cover art for
Sonic Youth’s 1992 Dirty album)
to banners emblazoned with abrasive self-proclamations
(“PANTS SHITTER & PROUD PS JERK-OFF TOO,” memorably)
to large-scale installations inspired by the bottle city of Kandor,
an object housed in Superman’s Fortress
of Solitude in the comic books.

Kelley was born in 1954 in Detroit (he described himself as a
“blue-collar anarchist”),
and his childhood there provided material for many of his works.
In 2010, he produced a sculpture modeled on his childhood home
and carted it around the city on the back of a flatbed truck,
for a special project with the city’s Museum of Contemporary Art.

In 1974, he founded the band Destroy All Monsters

with Cary Loren,

Niagara (Loren’s then-girlfriend) and Jim Shaw. They made noisy,

feedback-drenched music that was influenced by the other

local bands at the time,

The Stooges and the MC5. Destroy All Monsters was recently

the subject of two retrospectives, at the Prism Gallery in

Los Angeles and at the Boston University Art Gallery.

Kelley left the band in 1976, to attend graduate school at CalArts.

It was shortly after Kelley graduated from that institution that Helene Winer,

who had recently co-founded New York gallery Metro Pictures,

discovered his work. She was organizing an exhibition at

CalArts and visited Kelley’s studio.

She had never met him, but, she told Gallerist,

“He’s not someone you wouldn’t immediately know

was a really interesting artist.”

Kelley showed at Metro Pictures for two decades,

from the early 1980s until the early 2000s,

when he began showing with Gagosian.

His first show there–

also his first solo show in New York–was called

Monkey Island and Confusion.

The walls were covered with ink drawings on paper and the room

was packed with props from performances

he’d been doing in Los Angeles and New York.

“I think the reception,” Ms. Winer said, “was sort of…unprepared.
Partly because of the other artists we
were showing at the time were more orderly,
but really because it was a quite interesting aesthetic.
I’m quite sure we didn’t sell…
maybe anything.”

His friends remember him as smart and kind,
but also somewhat of an outsider.
He liked being around his peers, but he didn’t prescribe to the
art world as a social scene.

“He had a brilliant wisdom and a total disregard for anything
vaguely institutional or established,
” said RoseLee Goldberg, who met Kelley in 1987.
She commissioned a performance work by him for
the 2009 Performa Biennial.
“I think he is truly one of those figures that was just always
irritated by anything smacking of convention.
We worked with him for a year and he was constantly taking risks.
His entire life was about taking risks.”

In plumbing high and low culture for material,
Kelley sometimes courted controversy, as in his
1988 installation piece Pay for Your Pleasure,
which combined large-scale
images of artists and writers with quotations
that condoned amoral
behavior and artwork by a serial killer whose
identity varied based
on the location of the exhibition. Speaking of his 1990
show at Metro Pictures,
which included old stuffed animals arranged on dirty blankets,
Ms. Winer told Gallerist,“It’s strange later to imagine
how surprising and interesting something is
when it’s first seen–
because it gets immediately taken up and consumed
by a larger culture.”

In 1991 he had a show at the Whitney Museum entitled

“Catholic Tastes,”curated by Elisabeth Sussman,

who also curated this year’s Whitney Biennial,

which will feature Kelley.

“It was one of the great highlights of my career,
working with him,
” Ms. Sussman said. “He was so versatile,
he went through
this great performance phase,
made all these great artworks,
and he’s a fantastic writer.”

Kelley’s career exploded in the following decade,
with a show at
Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), as well as at a
host of museums and galleries throughout the world:
Portikus in Frankfurt,
Centre d’Art Contemporain in Geneva and the
Kunstverein in Hamburg. In 1997,
he participated in the prestigious Documenta 10
exhibition in Kassel,
Germany, with his friend, the artist Tony Oursler,
making work involving a band they had together,
called The Poetics.

Michael Briggs, director of Patrick Painter gallery,
in Santa Monica, Calif., where the artist showed for
many years, told Gallerist,
“Mike was really instrumental in helping Patrick start the gallery.
He was really important.”

Kelley had his first show at Gagosian Gallery in 2005.
The gallery began representing him and he was the subject
of several solo shows there.

“The greatest thing to do with Mike was to sort

of just turn him loose,”

said Sam Orlofsky, a director at Gagosian’s West 24th Street

space and the New York point person for Kelley.

“It was fun to shepherd his energy along in a conversation.

If you brought something up, he had an opinion, and then he

knew the history of the thing you brought up and then he knew

the history of the thing that the thing was referring to.

Comic books, movies or music or history.

He was like an index. A super computer.

” Mr. Orlofsky mentioned that Kelley kept extensive files and

indexes about his work or about potential subject matter.

“He was a taxonomist,” he added.

“But he was a taxonomist of everyday American culture.”

Beyond his art and music activities, Kelley was also a trenchant
and curious writer, and his artist statements, criticism
and other writings about art have been collected in
various anthologies,
including Foul Perfection (2002) and Minor Histories (2004).
His work is included in the collections of seemingly every
major modern and contemporary art museum,
and he was the recipient of the Wolfgang Hahn Prize,
the Skowhegan Medal and awards from the
Guggenheim Foundation
and the National Endowment for the Arts.

One of his earliest installations, The Little Girl’s Room (1980),

is up now in the “Under the Big Black Sun” exhibition of

California art at The Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art

(LA MoCA),

organized by Paul Schimmel, the museum’s chief curator.

The piece is based on a performance script centered around a

child’s dream-within-a-dream in which the child imagines

“the face of a pimp-like man whose smile reveals an infinity of sharp teeth.”

“I could go to Mike about a subject dealing with American art
at the beginning of the century or whenever and he would know
so much you would wonder if there was anything he doesn’t know,
” Mr. Schimmel, who met Kelley in 1981, told Gallerist.
“I think Mike is arguably the key individual who changed
the world’s perception of Los Angeles art.”

Kelley’s studio released a statement this afternoon saying,
“Mike was an irresistible force in contemporary art….
We cannot believe he is gone. But we know his legacy
will continue to touch and challenge anyone who crosses its path.
We will miss him. We will keep him with us.”

DON CORNELIUS- RIP

DON CORNELIUS, (September 27, 1936 – February 1, 2012)
was an American television show host and producer who is best known as the creator of the nationally syndicated dance/music franchise Soul Train, which he hosted from 1971 to 1993.

Originally a journalist inspired by the civil rights movement, Cornelius recognized that in the late 1960s there was no television venue in the United States for soul music, and introduced many African-American musicians to a larger audience as a result of their appearances on Soul Train, a program that was both influential among African-Americans and popular with a wider audience.

As writer, producer, and host of Soul Train, Cornelius was instrumental in offering wider exposure to black musicians like James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Michael Jackson, as well as creating opportunities for talented dancers that would presage subsequent television dance programs.

Cornelius said "We had a show that kids gravitated to," and Spike Lee described the program as an
"urban music time capsule.

Don Cornelius, the producer and television host who created the dance show “Soul Train,” was found shot dead in his Los Angeles home early Wednesday morning in what appears to be a suicide, the Los Angeles Police Department and the county coroner’s office said. He was 75 years old.

A person called the police from Mr. Cornelius’s house on Mulholland Drive in the Sherman Oaks neighborhood just before 4 a.m. and reported shots had been fired, a police spokesman, Chris No, said. When officers arrived, they were let into the house and found Mr. Cornelius lying lifeless on the floor with a gunshot wound to the head that appeared to be self-inflicted, said the Los Angeles County assistant chief coroner, Ed Winter.

Mr. Cornelius was taken to Cedar-Sinai Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:56 a.m., Mr. Winter said. “It was reported as a suicide, a self-inflicted wound,” he said. “I have investigators at the hospital.”

i have a personal memory with mr cornelius from back in 1987.

i was the wardrobe stylist for my long time friends- iris parker, valerie mackintosh and

alisa randolph from the girl group- MADAME X.

the girls wanted to do a costume change and the production said there was no time. iris wouldn't take no for an answer so during the short commerical break they changed their costumes on stage.

i saw don cornelius looking incredulously at the girls dressing on stage. then very keenly checking me out. he walked up to me.

i said to him, "i'm sorry mr. cornelius but they insisted." he responded looking directly at me up and down, "you just do what you need to do young man. do what you need to do."

THE FAIROAKS PROJECT

The Fairoaks Project almost wasn’t. Frank Melleno’s collection of photographs documenting life at San Francisco’s short-lived Fairoaks Hotel was consigned to a shoe box for almost three decades and would have remained there to this day had Melleno not shown them to his friend Gary Freeman. Freeman, a photo restorer and gallery owner, was immediately struck by their beauty and historical significance. Out of that meeting in 2007 grew the Fairoaks Project, the aim of which was the restoration, digitization, production and exhibition of Melleno’s work. The Fairoaks Project includes the selection of fifty-one restored images that were exhibited under the same name in June of 2010 at the drkrm/gallery in downtown Los Angeles. To a casual viewer, this slim volume of candid, provocative, often sexually explicit images might come across as some sort of soft core fluff. It is not. To crack the spine, leaf through its pages, and examine its images is to open a portal onto a secret place lost long ago.

KLAUS NOMI (January 24, 1944 – August 6, 1983), was a German countertenor noted for his wide vocal range and an unusual, otherworldly stage persona.

today is his birthday.. he would be 68 years old.

Nomi was known for his bizarrely visionary theatrical live performances, heavy make-up, unusual costumes,

and a highly stylized signature hairdo which flaunted a receding hairline. His songs were equally unusual, ranging from synthesizer-laden interpretations of classical music opera to covers of 1960s pop standards like Chubby Checker's "The Twist" and Lou Christie's "Lightnin' Strikes".

He is remembered in the US as one of David Bowie's backup singers for a 1979 performance on Saturday Night Live.
