Fitting topic for today, the anniversary of Peg Entwistle's suicide fall from the Hollywood(land)
Sign on Sept 16, 1932.
Peg met actor Robert Keith on Broadway in April 1927, and 4 days later they married. RK lied to Peg and on the marriage license. He claimed she was his first, but he had been married at least one other time. His mother and best friend also conspired to hid this fact from Peg,
along with one other minor detail...
Three days later, Peg learned she was the stepmother of a six year old boy named Robert Alba Keith, the future actor known as Brian Keith. In 1929, on the second anniversary of their marriage, Peg had had enough of the beatings, lies, drunkenness and public humiliation brought on by Robert and filed divorce action in Los Angeles. It crushed her.

On September 18, 1932, an anonymous woman telephoned the Los Angeles police and said that while hiking she had found a woman's shoe, purse and jacket below the Hollywoodland sign (now known as the Hollywood Sign). The woman said she looked in the purse and found a suicide note. She then said she looked down the mountain and saw a body.
A detective and two radio car officers found the body of a moderately well-dressed, blonde-haired, blue-eyed woman in a ravine below the sign. Peg'd uncle said that on Friday, September 16th she had told him she was going for a walk to see some friends. The police surmised that instead she made her way to the nearby southern slope of Mount Lee to the foot of the Hollywoodland sign, climbed a workman's ladder to the top of the "H" and jumped. The suicide note as published read:
"I am afraid, I am a coward. I am sorry for everything. If I had done this a long time ago, it would have saved a lot of pain. P.E."
Entwistle's death brought wide and often sensationalized publicity.
