THE*O*RET*I*CAL

THE*O*RET*I*CAL were events that took place around los angeles during the early 1980s.
organized by the late jack marquette and the late jim van tyne, these events presented some of the best original talent of the post~ punk era. the usual location was the ONE WAY leather bar on hoover street in silverlake. other venues included THE BRAVE DOG in little tokyo and the
ANTI-CLUB on melrose ave.
i remember like it was yesterday...

(THE ONE~WAY~ CIRCA~ 1980)

No one knew at the time that this little unassuming biker/leather bar would play a major role in changing Los Angeles' art/music scene. Some might say it was all Theoretical.  Although the 70's were a time of discovery, the 80's were a time of impact. The 80's were a time of re-invention and experimentation, a time to progress and a time to take risks. It was one mind expanding experience after another. Most of our lifelong friendships were started then. We shared so many adventures together, so much music, performance art, theater, creativity in all forms. We could hardly keep up although we certainly tried.

It was Downtown L.A. with Brave Dog and Al's bar, Atomic cafe, Gorky's and Jack Marquette's art district loft with it's never ending parties and many other venues. It was Chinatown and Silver Lake and a little trashy biker/leather bar called the One Way, which became our own notorious Theoretical.

We had our own kings and queens of the underground, Clare Glidden, Jack Marquette, Jim Van Tyne, all of whom are no longer with us. We had amazing bands....
Party Boys, Nervous Gender, Red Wedding, Christian Death, Age of Consent and so many more.
I can't name them all.

So let me get to it. I am posting all the photos I have from that era. Many of them belong in the Theoretical group... . It's been 30+ years and time is not favorable to photographs. So many have deteriorated. There was no digital back then.
The stories behind the photos are as interesting as the photos themselves, if not more so.... There are too many good memories to keep to yourself.
